The keeper, deputising for injured No.1 Adam Federici, pulled off several superb saves to keep the Reds at bay in a battling Premier League encounter at the Madejski Stadium.

Adkins, a former goalkeeper himself, hailed the youngster's performance as he claimed his first point as manager of the club.

He told Sky Sports: "The goalkeeping display was outstanding wasn't it?

"I always say the goalkeeper is the most important player in the team, maybe because of my own background. But today it was underlined.

"He's a young English goalkeeper and I know he's got a bright future.

"We've kept a clean-sheet because Alex has pulled off some fantastic saves. But the players have worked very hard as a unit as well today."

Despite the encouraging result, Reading remain rock bottom of the table and look destined to be plying their trade in the Championship next season.

But while Adkins knows the Royals ideally needed a maximum haul from Saturday's game, he insists they will keep fighting to the end, adding: "Oh you'd better believe that.

"We'll take the clean-sheet, we'll take the point but we know we needed the three today.

"We look at the progression, the players are improving all the time, for what we're looking to go and do."

lassic management. Build them up and then knock them back. Raise expectations and then dampen them. Create a dynamic where by you demand the most from your team, but where the team are given room to manoeuvre unexpected or unwanted results. Classy work by Van Gaal, he really reminds me a lot of me. A smart cookie, make no doubt.
