Grant Munro: Targeting win over Inverness

Grant Munro: Targeting win over Inverness

Inverness have the upper hand in four derbies this season, wining two and drawing the other two in the SPL and Scottish Cup.

The latest meeting was in Dingwall just two weeks ago and ended goalless, a result which Caley Thistle manager Terry Butcher described as two good points for the Highlands after County had joined his side in the top four.

Both sides look set to battle for a European spot but they have still to secure a top-six place and with seventh-placed Dundee United at home to bottom club Dundee on Sunday, Munro admits both sides might be looking over their shoulder.

The 32-year-old, who scored a stunning volley against league leaders Celtic last weekend, said: "There have been some great games but we've lost a few of them which is not great, so it's something we want to put right.

"But with Inverness being at home you would expect them to be favourites on their home patch.

"Every game both teams will be going out for the win with both teams having in the back of their minds that if they lose the game it will be a dent in their hopes of getting a top-six place."

The defender added: "Neither team will want to lose any ground on each other and there's the top six to aim for as well. It's getting closer, you can almost reach it now.

"Both Inverness and Ross County have had a remarkable season so far but there's still plenty more points to play for. Both sides' target is to get a top-six finish and we play each other on Saturday so something's got to give or it's going to be a stalemate again."

County's debut season in the SPL has exceeded all realistic expectations.

And Munro, who played 380 times for Inverness, knows full well what achieving top-six status would mean to both Highland clubs.

"It will be fantastic for myself personally and for Ross County it would be unbelievable," he said.

"Inverness have missed out a few times and on the last day when I was there. It would be a remarkable achievement for both clubs."

The Staggies are aiming to build on their 3-2 comeback win over Celtic and extend their unbeaten run to 12 matches but Munro knows there will be an element of unpredictability.

"With a derby match form goes out of the window, it's a toss of a coin of who is going to win and it's great that way that it's on a knife edge with what's at stake with the split being so close now," he said.
