Saints were unfortunate not to lead at half-time but a much improved second half showing from the hosts saw a James Vincent penalty and further goals from Aaron Doran and Billy McKay seal a routine victory.

Butcher said afterwards: said: "I'm delighted. That performance against St Mirren was just a continuation of the displays the boys have been putting in pre-season.

"I would like to take credit for my half-time team talk having an effect, but I can't do that.

"It just seems to be the case at home that the first half of matches, especially in the early part of the season, are tight and tense affairs.

"However, in the second half the game opens up and there's that bit more space for us to operate in. The wind didn't help us in the first half either, but we'll certainly take three goals in the second half."

Buddies boss Danny Lennon said: "In the first half, I thought the players showed a great hunger and character.

"I told the players at half-time I wanted more of the same, but how cruel football can be.

"The penalty decision went against us, which the players felt aggrieved about, and it seemed to affect us. Just 60 seconds later we are 2-0 down through a comedy of errors and then we lose a third goal.

"We worked really hard in the first half, but we let the goals we lost early in the second half affect us when we should have realised there was still enough time to get something back."

I

still can't see the Phil Jones thing that some people go on about. Whenever I watch him play it's a repeat of headless chicken meets a gurning Bambi on ice for 90 minutes.

P

robably the first list I've come across in a long time where I agree with a large majority of what was written. Can't agree with everything though, Zaba has had an awful season by his standards, I'd put Monreal (a player who I've never rated) up there, gotta give credit where it's due, he's really stepped up his game.
