The 21-year-old struck his 16th goal of the season at McDiarmid Park after Murray Davidson had headed Saints into the lead after 70 minutes.

May curled home from 20 yards to confirm the victory but Wright is confident he can keep hold of the in-demand player until the end of the campaign.

"It was a great finish. Stevie is having an excellent season and I am delighted with that," he said.

"He can play at the highest level but there is a lot of work to be done.

"If someone comes in and makes the right offer, that's football, he will be gone and we have to move on.

"But I keep emphasising the point, he doesn't want to leave, he wants to stay for the full season.

"It is his first full season - I know he has had loan spells at Hamilton and Alloa - and we are going for top six, he is playing every week, we have a League Cup semi-final to look forward to, we have the Scottish Cup to look forward to.

"He has a lot to play for this season and he will develop by continually playing.

"The worry for Stevie if he moves is that he stops playing, or plays a bit part for the next six to 18 months.

"It will take an exceptional offer for him and with performances like that the price will be going up and up anyway."

St Mirren boss Danny Lennon was frustrated with his side's performance and admitted they had let down the fans who had made the trip from Paisley.

"There was a massive incentive to jump a place in the league today and we failed to take that. I was straight to the point with the players. You have to defend," he said.

"Regardless of how poorly you are playing, you are hoping a clean sheet at least gets you a point but we are looking vulnerable at the back.

"We have 17 (league) games to go, what are we going to do, wait until the last five games until we have to start to huff and puff and fight for things?

"Our fans deserve better than that, for what they invest emotionally, financially and with their time, they deserve more."
