Gordon still holds the record for the highest transfer fee for a British goalkeeper when he joined Sunderland in a £9million deal from Hearts in 2007.

The 31-year-old, who last played a competitive game in April 2012, has taken specialist surgery and a long course of revolutionary injections after suffering a major knee injury.

And now 6ft 4in Gordon says his fitness and sharpness are back, meaning he is ready to find a new club and regain his No 1 spot in the national side.

"I feel I can take pride from the way I've worked hard to get back," Gordon told the Daily Record.

"The majority of people have probably written me off by now, the perception being I'll not be back.

"There will be others who'll say I might not return but I will get back to my best. I'm willing to prove all those people wrong."
