Ally McCoist is plotting Motherwell's downfall

Motherwell defender Fraser Kerr is wary of Rangers' determination to take a top-flight scalp on Wednesday night - but he remains confident his team can progress to the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter-finals.

Kerr knows Rangers will be fired up for their first match against SPL opponents since being relaunched in the Irn-Bru Third Division.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist claims Motherwell's position at the top of the SPL makes the visitors favourites.

But with the likes of Francisco Sandaza, Dean Shiels and Ian Black joining Rangers in the summer, on-loan Birmingham teenager Kerr knows they face a tough test.

"If you look at Rangers' team, they've got a lot of SPL-standard players," he said. "They want to be playing in the SPL this season so they try and get a scalp over us to prove they should still be up there. We've just got to be wary of that and go out and play our game.

"I wouldn't say we are favourites though as they've got a lot of good quality players. We can't look at it as if they're a Third Division team. We'll go out there as if they are playing in the SPL and give it our all.

"But as I've said, we're playing well at the moment and will go there full of confidence looking to progress."

Manager Stuart McCall has found it difficult to watch what has happened to his former club and team-mate McCoist but he has urged his players to forget the circumstances of the match and concentrate on the football, and he will do the same.

"I classify Alistair as a good friend and it has not been nice seeing what has happened to him since he took over," McCall said. "He had a hellish summer, as every Rangers supporter had, and everyone connected with the club. It's not nice to see.

"It certainly wasn't the draw I was wanting but we aim to win every game we possibly can and we will certainly be looking forward to doing that."

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
