Neil Alexander: Hoping for Old Firm derby

Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander has targeted victory over Inverness in the Scottish Communities League Cup to further boost fans' hopes of an Old Firm derby this season.

The Glasgow rivals could have been thrown together in the fourth round draw at Hampden on Thursday but the Light Blues were handed a home tie against the Highlanders, while Celtic will play host to St Johnstone.

With Rangers plying their trade in the Irn-Bru Third Division this season, the cup competitions provide the only chance of a meeting between the two.

Alexander knows it is a clash that both sets of supporters would love to see and one that would attract even more attention than usual but the Gers number one is happy to focus on Inverness for now.

He said: "If we'd got drawn against Celtic, we would just have to get on with it.

"It would be fantastic for the media and the fans - I think they would have been looking forward to it more than anything.

"It's not happened and hopefully, if we can put on a good performance against Inverness and get into the next round, who knows?

"If we meet Celtic in the future, then great, we will deal with it at the time."

Inverness will travel to Glasgow for the cup clash at the end of the month.

Alexander said: "It's a great draw for us. A home draw was really important.

"Inverness is going to be a tough, tough game. Every time we've played them in the past, they've always given us a really good game.

"It's always been close. I don't expect anything different this time.

"We are delighted it's a home tie as it maybe gives us a slight advantage but I'd imagine, with them being the SPL team, they will be favourites for the game.

"If we show the same performance that we gave against Motherwell in the last round, that gives us a lot of confidence going into the Inverness game."

Rangers dumped then Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders Motherwell out of the competition with an impressive 2-0 win at Ibrox last month.

Alexander added: "It goes to show, against a top team, we can raise our game and play really well and match anybody who comes to Ibrox.

"We took a lot of heart out of the game and we need to show the same against Inverness to get through. The performance against Motherwell was sensational. To a man, we were all exceptional that night.

"It just goes to show what we can do if we really work hard and believe in ourselves.

"It's going to take something like that against Inverness. We are going to have to be at our best to progress."

Rangers travel to Stirling this weekend and Alexander knows they must resolve their poor away form in the league before they can look ahead to the cup.

He said: "The league is our priority this year and we need to start picking up three points away from home.

"Our form away from home is not good enough at the minute but we are working hard on the training ground to rectify that and hopefully come Saturday we can put it right with three points."
