Saints' 2-0 win over Motherwell, combined with Inverness' defeat at Ross County, saw them finish third in the SPL and clinch the final Europa League berth.

The final whistle saw fans spill onto the McDiarmid Park pitch to celebrate with the players and Lomas was thrilled with his team.

He said: "To have two European campaigns on the spin for a club like St Johnstone is probably like winning the league for us.

"For a club like this in Perth, it's probably as good as it gets so we should enjoy it."

With Ross County and Inverness grabbing headlines through the season, Lomas says it has been hard for his team to get the credit he feels they deserve.

"To be fair, it's been slightly underplayed and I can understand why because with Ross County coming up, it was a magnificent achievement by Derek Adams and all his people," he said.

"Inverness were everybody's favourites to go down, with Ross County, and they've had a great season and scored a lot of goals.

"I've got to tip my hat to Terry Butcher. They had goalscorers in abundance.

"Our team was all about the team. It wasn't just about individuals and it showed again today."

Goals from Liam Craig - who is set to join Hibernian next season - and Nigel Hasselbaink clinched victory over Motherwell, who already had the runners-up spot sewn up.

Lomas said: "I thought it was a day of excellence. We carried out our gameplan to perfection and it could have been by a lot more.

"The boys were excellent. We just had to do what we could do. The lads were fully focused and you saw that from their effort and commitment and the quality of play."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
