Colombian defender Cristian Zapata is to join AC Milan from Villarreal on a season-long loan deal, the Spanish club have confirmed.

The 25-year-old, who has 15 caps for his country, passed a medical in Milan with his return to Italian football announced shortly after. He joined Villarreal from Udinese last season.

A brief statement on the Villarreal website read: "Villarreal and Milan have reached an agreement to transfer Cristian Zapata for this season.

"Thus the Colombian defender will return to play in Italian football with the Rossoneri."

West Brom were reported to have expressed an interest after Zapata indicated he wanted to leave Villarreal,.who were relegated to the Segunda after finishing 18th in La Liga last season.
