Inter Milan got the better of 10-man Fiorentina

A review of the weekend's action so far in the Italian Serie A.

Inter Milan moved up to third in Serie A thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win over 10-man Fiorentina at the San Siro.

Diego Milito put the Nerazzurri ahead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute and Antonio Cassano made it two 11 minutes before the interval.

But a goal from Romulo only six minutes later gave the Viola hope and they continued to pile the pressure on their hosts.

A red card for Gonzalo Rodriguez in the 62nd minute diminished Fiorentina's chances of getting an equaliser, but Inter still had to work hard for the three points.

Edinson Cavani's second-half penalty earned Napoli a deserved 1-0 victory over Sampdoria in a match they dominated at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The Uruguay international converted after a foul which earned Daniele Gastaldello a red card and Napoli, already the better side against 11 men, could easily have won by more but for wayward finishing throughout.

Samp's Marcelo Estigarribia and Eder had gone close in the first half but they were isolated threats as the home side were largely overrun.

Lazio struck twice in the first half to record a 2-1 victory over Siena which leaves them four points off the summit.

Cristian Ledesma set up the first for Ederson and then scored himself from the penalty spot to give the hosts a commanding half-time lead.

Siena more than played their part in an evenly-matched encounter, but Massimo Paci's stoppage-time goal was all they had to show for their efforts and they remain in the bottom three after six games.

Fabrizio Miccoli hit a hat-trick as Palermo beat Chievo 4-1 to heap more pressure on visiting coach Domenico Di Carlo.

Di Carlo had received a vote of confidence from the club's sporting director Giovanni Sartori during the week but his players did nothing to further enhance his job security with a limp display.

In contrast, it was a first win in charge for new Palermo boss Gian Piero Gasperini following two defeats - and he will be toasting Miccoli tonight.

The veteran striker opened the scoring after 13 minutes and restored the hosts' advantage after Marco Rigoni equalised.

Luigi Giorgi made it 3-1 with 10 minutes to go before Miccoli completed his treble shortly afterwards.

Torino took full advantage of a spectacular collapse from Atalanta to claim their first away win of the Serie A season with a 5-1 success.

German Denis ensured a steady start for the hosts before Rolando Bianchi equalised from the penalty spot before half-time.

Alessandro Gazzi, Alen Stefanovic and Danilo D'Ambrosio all notched after the break, Bianchi completing the rout with his fourth goal of the season to lift promoted Torino up to sixth place.

Bologna rediscovered some of their early-season form with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over 10-man Catania.

Without a win since their remarkable come-from-behind triumph at Roma, Stefano Pioli's men were finding goals hard to come by, but Tiberio Guarente got the Rossoblu rolling once again with a cool first-half finish.

Alberto Gilardino made it five for the club he joined on loan from Genoa with a goal either side of the break with Panagiotis Kone completing the rout following Ciro Capuano's late dismissal.

Cagliari's recent woes continued as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Pescara at a scarcely-populated Stadio Is Arenas.

Goals from Christian Terlizzi and Vladimir Weiss lifted Pescara to a second win in five days and heaped further misery on Cagliari, who replied late on through a Mauricio Pinilla penalty but also lost Luca Rossettini to a red card.

Udinese and Genoa picked up a point apiece in a goalless draw played at a pedestrian pace at the Stadio Friuli.

The absence of Udinese's star striker Antonio Di Natale was felt as Udinese struggled to create chances, even though they marginally had the better of the game.

Genoa created very few openings and appeared to settle for a draw right from the outset, and that is the result Gigi Di Canio's side obtained to keep them in the top half.

On Saturday, Juventus opened up a three-point lead at the top by seeing off Roma 4-1 in Turin.

The victory was wrapped up within the opening 20 minutes with goals from Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Alessandro Matri putting the Bianconeri in the driving seat.

Pablo Osvaldo pulled a goal back from the penalty spot for the Giallorossi but Zdenek Zeman's men were unable to find a way back into the game and Sebastian Giovinco added a late fourth to leave Roma eight points behind the Bianconeri in the table.

Parma held AC Milan to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Tardini, halting the Rossoneri in their tracks after they looked to have recovered from a poor start to the season.

Stephan El Shaarawy, who was Milan's hero in their midweek 2-0 win over Cagliari, put Massimiliano Allegri's side in front early in the second half but Daniele Galloppa equalised in the 66th minute to earn Roberto Donadoni's side a point, which leaves them just a point behind their visitors.

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
