Daniele De Rossi: Dropped from squad to face France

Italy head coach Cesare Prandelli has taken a hardline approach to Daniele De Rossi's indiscipline by dropping the Roma midfielder from his squad to face France.

The 29-year-old was sent off for punching Lazio captain Stefano Mauri in Sunday's Roman derby, a game Lazio won 3-2, with Prandelli applying his strict code of ethics by omitting De Rossi from his 25-man selection.

Prandelli has confirmed he will not include players dismissed for violent conduct or dissent, so De Rossi's place has been taken by his Roma team-mate Alessandro Florenzi, who is named for the first time.

Newcastle defender Davide Santon returns to the national set-up for the first time since March 2011 as the Azzurri prepare to face Les Bleus in a friendly at the Stadio Ennio Tardini on Wednesday evening.

Cagliari defender Davide Astori last featured in August's friendly against England, while the inclusion of AC Milan's Stephan El Shaarawy - who now has two caps - would appear to signal the end of the striker's career with the Under-21s.

Squad: Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Napoli), Sirigu (Paris St Germain), Viviano (Fiorentina); Astori (Cagliari), Balzaretti (Roma), Barzagli (Juventus), Bonucci (Juventus), Chiellini (Juventus), Criscito (Zenit St Petersburg), Maggio (Napoli), Santon (Newcastle); Candreva (Lazio), Diamanti (Bologna), Florenzi (Roma), Giaccherini (Juventus), Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo, Pirlo (Juventus), Verratti (Paris St Germain); Balotelli (Manchester City), Destro (Roma), El Shaarawy, Giovinco (Juventus), Osvaldo (Roma).

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
