The 34-year-old Sicilian's current contract expires next June but Zamparini is keen to bring Aronica to the Stadio Renzo Barbera as soon as possible, with Palermo continuing to struggle in the lower reaches of Serie A.

He told Radio Kiss Kiss: "We have already talked about Aronica because he was interested in coming to Palermo last year.

"We are working on it but I'm not sure where we are up to with the current negotiations.

"Aronica would be useful to us on a psychological level. He has competed at a top level for many years."

The Palermo-born left-back joined Napoli in 2008 but has played a reduced role for the Scudetto hopefuls this season, despite agreeing a one-year contract extension in May.

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.
