The 22-year-old midfielder has featured sparingly for Sheffield Wednesday since joining from Preston in the summer, making just six appearances in total.
But Mayor did make his first start of the campaign in the 1-0 defeat against promotion-chasing Cardiff last week and is hopeful he can now kick on.
He told the club's official website: "Hopefully I have put myself in contention but, like the manager says, you have to perform in training as well. Every player gets his chance every day when they come to the training ground.
"When I came to Wednesday I wasn't fully fit, but I feel I am getting there now and it's up to me to force my way into the manager's plans.
"I feel I did okay against Cardiff. I like to get on the ball, run at players, get past players and create things going forward.
"I thought I did well and now I need to keep improving."
