The Owls, who won automatic promotion last year, climbed four points clear of the bottom three at the weekend and will guarantee themselves another season in the Championship if they win at relegation rivals Peterborough on Saturday.
The result at London Road will be irrelevant if both Barnsley and Wolves lose.
"Once we know where we are, we can sit down and set the next plan in place," said Jones after Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Ipswich.
"The chairman will tell you I always have two or three players in mind. Once we know where we are, it will be case of where do we strengthen, how do we strengthen?
"We'll have a list of players we have been looking at this season. Then can we go and get them?"
Jones is hoping to strengthen in order to challenge at the top end of the table next season.
He added: "There was a time when, with a couple more results, we might have been doing that.
"But we're not at that stage yet. That will be the next step for us, depending on what players we can get and where we finish."
