The 22-year-old midfielder will stay at Hillsborough on an initial deal until March.

Gardner is a product of Villa's highly acclaimed youth set-up, and after a successful loan spell at Coventry he made his debut in late 2011.

Also an England Under-21 international, he was considered one of the best players of his generation but serious injury has since hampered his progress.

He is now eligible for Wednesday's FA Cup fifth-round clash with Charlton on Saturday.
