The Football Association have charged Saints with failing to control their players after referee Mark Clattenburg ruled that Luke Shaw pushed Grant Holt just inside the penalty area.
Artur Boruc kept out Holt's subsequent spot-kick, but Southampton players continued to protest after the final whistle in the 0-0 draw and were joined on the pitch by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
The club have until 4pm on Friday to respond to the charge.
"If people cross the line, then of course you have to be charged, but I think at that moment we were fighting to keep that clean sheet," Hooiveld said.
"We had fought the whole of what was a tough game and tough circumstances, then they were awarded a penalty which in our eyes was not the right decision.
"Then the emotions went a little bit high and maybe we got a little too close. I think whatever happens after that, it is not up to us to decide."
Asked if Southampton had been out of order, Hooiveld added: "Not really. I think it is also in the moment in which it happened and how it happened.
"Football is a game of emotions and of course it has to be directed in the right way.
"But sometimes if you feel you have been done an injustice as a football player you lose your head a little bit.
"I think that's what happened and what is going to happen, I don't really know."
Southampton's immediate concern is Saturday's clash with Liverpool, which will see Hooiveld come up against Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan has been in sensational form this season and is one of the favourites for PFA Player of the Year.
Hooiveld revealed his vote has gone to a fellow Dutchman in Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, but knows there is not much between him and Suarez.
"He is a great player," he said. "I know him because he started in Europe at Groningen, which is where I am from.
"You can just see that he has developed very well. He has pace, is very complete and it is always a nice challenge [to face players like him].
"It will be 90 minutes and a fair game as we both start on zero. I enjoy the competitiveness of playing against the likes of him."
