The 31-year-old Brazilian struggled for regular action during the 2012/13 season, making just 10 starts in all competitions throughout the campaign.

He has also often started games in midfield or on the wing, contributing to a goalless run that stretches back to January 2012.

Far from becoming frustrated at the lack of action or even looking for a move away, his time on the bench has merely strengthened Guly's resolve to fight for his place.

While many of the Saints players will be thinking of a hard-earned summer break Guly, who joined the club from Italian side Cesena in 2010, is already looking to hit the ground running in pre-season training.

"I need to show that I am worth a place in the team, and I must do that in the pre-season," he told the club's official website.

"I need to start hitting the back of the net again. For sure it's the only way back for me.

"I wanted to be playing more, but what has happened this season has made me even more determined to show what I can do next season for the team."

Southampton enjoyed an eventful season that saw them recover from a poor start before sacking their manager Nigel Adkins in January.

They replaced him with Mauricio Pochettino, a relative unknown in England, and the Argentine guided them to a respectable 14th-place finish in what was their first top-flight season since 2005.

Guly is full of praise for the work Pochettino has done at St Mary's so far and is optimistic about the future under his stewardship.

"The new manager has made it so that's it's a pleasure to come into work and the way the team have been playing," he added.

"The new coach has brought many new ideas. He has changed the way we play and has made everyone in the club feel important and that is important to someone like me.

"I always I want to give my best for Southampton Football Club and I think the manager knows this. I have never been more determined to do well for the club than I am now."

heyremind me of Utd's treble winning side. Swashbuckling and risk prone. We ha Jaap Stam to paper over the cracks at the back though. Not sure they have their Jaap yet.

he solution is to not feel sorry for any of Jabba, Gold or Sullivan. They're all deeply unpleasant and all deserve each other. If only West Ham would sign Barton and Suarez then no one would ever need to despise any other club.
