Lambert scored on his England debut against Scotland in August and the 31-year-old subsequently started last month's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.

He has retained his place for the upcoming games against Montenegro and Poland, and Lallana is delighted to see how well Lambert is performing.

Lallana, who was called into the England squad 12 months ago, has been in impressive form this season and hopes to eventually follow Lambert back into Hodgson's plans.

"What's happened to Rickie is an inspiration," said Lallana in several newspapers. "Of course, it is the same for me, Jack Cork, Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw in the future.

"It's great and we're all delighted for Rickie and how well he is doing. I wish him all the best.

"He's got a couple of big internationals and hopefully they can get six points out of it."

The midfielder scored in Sunday's 2-0 win over Swansea City and Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino feels his captain will be in contention for an England call-up if he maintains his form.

"It's not my decision in the end but if he keeps on performing as he did he will be very close to getting into the national side," said Pochettino.

"I am very happy for Adam. He's a great guy, a great professional and he feels very passionate about this club. I'm very happy for him.

"I am very happy he scored and for everything he represents for this club, all the good values he represents. I'm over the moon for him."

ah, Fergie is just having another pop at Rooney. He just wants to put him down whenever he gets a chance. Rooney is by far the best English player. Carrick is not far behind, mind. However, by elevating Carrick like that, Sir is having a dig at Wayne. Fergie is well-known for mind games like that. Good to see he's still feisty.
