Lambert only focused on Saints

Rickie Lambert insists doing Liverpool a favour by denying title-chasing Manchester City the victory they need over his Southampton side on Saturday has never crossed his mind.

The England hitman was a trainee with the Reds having grown up in the Liverpool area, and could do his boyhood heroes a huge favour by helping Saints get something out of their clash with City on Saturday.

However, Lambert insists that improving Southampton's points tally is the only thing on his mind.

"For me my first, second, third and fourth priority is to do well for Southampton - that's all that matters," Lambert told the Manchester Evening News.

"As a group of players we have never been this far up. We want to finish as high as possible - every position counts.

"It means everything to us - we're absolutely made up with the season we are having and there's a possibility it can get even better."

In what has been a fine season for the much-travelled hitman, Lambert admits that securing a spot in Roy Hodgson's England squad for this summer's World Cup would be the cherry on the cake.

"I would be lying if I said I don't think about the World Cup," Lambert added.

"There's a chance I can go.

"I'm trying not to think too much about it because it would put pressure on me but I know playing well will help. I am playing well at the moment but I want to keep my foot on the pedal and see what happens."

icky van Wolfswinkel's remarkable record of one goal from one game at least deserves an honourable mention. And I'm willing to bet that at least one of Costa, Ulloa or Enner Valencia will earn a place on the list by the end of the season. Probably not Costa
