Stoke were busy early in the window enforcing their defence, bringing in Dutch international Erik Pieters and Spanish youngster Marc Muniesa.

But it was in attack where Hughes was forced to go to the last of the window before he managed to bolster his options, signing highly-rated Austrian Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen.

Hughes pressed hard for the likes of Benfica striker Nelson Oliviera and Hannover front man Mame Biram Diouf but they failed to finalise those deals - although with Stephen Ireland also arriving on deadline day, in the end the Stoke boss was pleased.

"It's fair to say I've pursued a number of targets and you won't always get the ones you want, but we did get the majority of them," he told The Sentinel.

"Few clubs can say, hand on heart, that they got everybody they wanted.

"It's on record that we pursued a number that fell through, but when you look back at what we have got and the balance of the squad, I am delighted. Overall, it has been a good window.

"It's important if you go into the market that you come out with a stronger squad, and I think we have."

Arnautovic

Hughes was particularly pleased with former Inter Milan forward Arnautovic.

"Marko is very adept at playing across the front line, "he gives us that flexibility," he added.

"He can play both wings, and in his own mind that is where he thinks he's more accomplished, but only because he's played more games there.

"But I've no doubt he can play in any number of positions and in different combinations with the players we've got here. In that regard, I think he's a very good acquisition.

"I'm also comfortable with the options I've got up front. I've also got Jonny Walters who can play down the middle as well."

think he'll do quite well. My only reservation would be Kagawa, who had similar stats to Firmino in the bundesliga before he came, but time will tell.
