Jones was close to Stoke exit

Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones says he would have left the club in the summer if Mark Hughes had not replaced Tony Pulis as manager.

During Pulis' time as boss, which came to an end this summer, the club were widely regarded as playing a direct, unattractive brand of football.

That is also the view of Jones, who Pulis broke Stoke's transfer record to sign for £8million in 2010 but only started 12 times for them last season.

Jones told Sky Sports News: "The atmosphere at the club, and the entire squad could testify to it, wasn't good.

"The things that we were doing, and the way that we were playing football, it was not encouraging for a lot of us.

"You would probably not have seen a lot of the players at the club if the situation had remained the same.

"But things can change sometimes pretty quickly in football. You just have to sometimes weather the storm.

"Whether there is a future or not that's left to be seen but at the moment I am happy with the way that we are working every day. It's been wonderful since the new manager and new team came in."

Jones, who has started the last four matches in all competitions, feels there has been a definite improvement and believes a top-10 Premier League finish is realistic for the Potters this term.

He said: "I'm happy with the football we are playing because since I came to the club I believed we had the players to play football but we weren't given the chance.

"Now I'm confident that we can do well this season and will probably finish in the top 10. I'm happy with what's happening at the moment."

t's why Mourinho is so successful. He gives players a specific, limited set of functions to perform. They are but a cog in a machine. Do no more, do no less. I assume he learnt it from LvG :)

really hope that someone in the mainstream media spots that the Bayern manager played for and managed Barcelona quite well, and thinks to mention it in the build up. That would be really interesting.
