Mark Hughes: Satisfied after another decent display earned an away point

Mark Hughes: Satisfied after another decent display earned an away point

It was a closely contested game at the KC Stadium and both goalkeepers made good saves, but Hughes felt that his team had the better opportunities.

Stephen Ireland had a goal disallowed and Ryan Shawcross headed against the crossbar, while Peter Crouch was twice denied by excellent Allan McGregor saves.

Hughes nevertheless admitted that he could have few complaints after another encouraging display and hard-earned point away from home.

He told Sky Sports: "In terms of controlling the game, I think we were the side that demonstrated that more than Hull, and in terms of clear-cut chances we had better opportunities.

"We just needed to take one of them and I think that would have been enough to win the game tonight.

"But I am pleased enough with the performance. Any points away from home are gladly received, and the only frustration is maybe that we haven't taken maximum points because of the chances we created.

"In fairness, the keeper played very well for them and made some outstanding saves, but the game itself I felt were totally in control of.

"I never really felt we came under any concerted pressure from Hull, and as the away team I am pleased with that."

Hughes was satisfied that Stoke finished the stronger side as they kept pushing for a winning goal.

"We have players whose first thought is to attack, the likes of Marko (Arnautovic), Oussama Assaidi and Peter (Crouch), who I thought was great today, led the line exceptionally well.

"Stephen Ireland will always be a threat with his running and willingness to make things happen."

Hughes added: "That is one defeat in eight games now, so we have been reasonably consistently of late and I am pleased we are showing progress and we will get better."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
