Hughes hails versatile Wilson

Mark Hughes says the fine form Marc Wilson is displaying at centre-half will allow Stoke City to ease Robert Huth back into the fold.

The Potters have had to shuffle their pack after seeing commanding defender Huth laid low with a knee complaint which has required surgery.

His absence could have hit Stoke hard, as he remains a key component in their first-choice starting XI.

Wilson's versatility has, however, helped to cover the loss, with the Republic of Ireland international putting in another assured display on Saturday as Hughes' men collected their sixth clean sheet of the season in a goalless draw at Hull City.

The Stoke boss told The Sentinel: "Marc looks really comfortable and he's done really well for us.

"I'm really pleased for Marc because he's a good professional and a good technical player who can play in any number of positions. He shows real composure and doesn't get fazed by anything.

"There's no real pressure to get Robert back before he's ready. He's an important player for us, we all know that, but if we can make sure he's 100 per cent right we may well get a bigger, stronger Robert Huth...if that's possible."

On his hopes heading forward, with Stoke having edged five points clear of the relegation zone, Hughes says the club are making the kind of progress he had envisaged after inheriting the managerial reins from Tony Pulis over the summer.

He added: "I'm not going to go away too much from what has brought success in the past.

"But I want to progress to allow us to become a top-10 team in the next couple of years and have the potential to do that on a regular basis."

hould have stayed because we carried him for 6.5 years. And then he has a breakthrough season, and was gone soon after. MU fans, you would be as disgusted had C Ronaldo left in 2007 and not 2009.

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
