Hughes was unhappy with the award of a penalty to the visitors to enable Liverpool to go 3-2 up after Raheem Sterling went down in the box under a challenge from Marc Wilson.

Hughes felt Sterling went down looking for the spot-kick and felt the incident was the turning point in the game after they had battled back from two goals to draw level at half-time

Asked if the defeat was tough to take, Hughes told Sky Sports. "Well it is because in terms of our performance I thought we were excellent, obviously we have made individual errors and collective errors and things have gone against us decisions.

"I thought the penalty decision was really a poor one from the referee's point of view.

"I didn't think it merited a penalty decision there we are disappointed.

"The lad's gone over too easy he's looking for a penalty he immediately looks up claiming a penalty and the referee has bought it.

"Listen we have never been ahead in the game and unfortunately we had to force the issue and given the ability on the break they have got they got us a couple of times.

"We just gave ourselves too much to do today.

"Unfortunately 2-0 down to a freak deflection and we didn't deal with a long punt up front so we are 2-0 down without them really having a shot on goal at that point.

"So we showed great character to come back level at half-time and then we are thinking we have got a platform to really go again and lo and behold we get a poor decision for the penalty

"I don't think it's a penalty that goes against us we are trying to get back into the game and we concede really a goal we should do better with and then we get back into the game again and poor defending again we have allowed them the fifth goal to take the game away from us

"In terms of effort and determination to try and stay in game and affect the game I thought we were really good in that regard, but defensively we made too many errors today.

"I can't fault my players for effort and determination."

think Liverpool should start trying alternative therapy now, given that Sturridge's hips and knees are apparently unfathomable to modern medicine. Voodoo, acupuncture, healing oils, rolling in the snow after a hot bath, its all got to be worth a go now.
