16.27: Quinton Fortune has signed a short-term deal with Championship club Doncaster Rovers.
15.45: Woah there. There are evidently some bored folk over at Daily Mail online because they are speculating that Barcelona will make a £12m move for Jonny Evans. Hmmm.
15.40: Our friends at SkySports.com 'understand' that Steve Bruce is still really rather keen on Lee Cattermole. He will apparently go back in for the tough-tackling midfielder who had a cracking first season at Wigan.
15.03: Oh lordy, it's quiet. So we'll bring you news that Lee Trundle has been told he can leave Bristol City, who have sold Michael McIndoe to Coventry City.
13.36: Guillem Balague has been at it again - this time claiming that Manchester United have been talking to David Silva's agent about a move to Old Trafford, though they are yet to make a bid.
'I can tell you that over the last couple of days there has been contact between Manchester United and the representatives of David Silva,' writes Balague on his website.
'However, it resulted in nothing more than an informal conversation about the player's situation at Valencia and no bid has yet been made by the Premier League club for the transfer of the Spanish international.'
12.47: Here's one for the 'Where AreThey Now' files - Brentford have signed former £7m man Carl Cort on a five-month deal.
12.30: South Africa midfielder Kagiso Dikgacoi has been talking our sister site football365.co.za and claims that his move to Fulham is now completed after a trial.
He said: "Yes it is completed now. I return next week to Fulham. I have just come back (to South Africa) to sort out my stuff that I left behind and to see the family."
11.52: It seems the Swiss FA may have jumped the gun slightly with their report of the Philippe Senderos to Everton deal. It seems the deal is being negotiated but is not complete.
Chairman Bill Kenwright told Echo Sport today: "We have been negotiating with Arsenal for the transfer of Philippe. Nothing has been concluded yet but talks are on going."
Senderos has apparently agreed to the switch but a fee is yet to be agreed with Arsenal.
11.03: Back to the latest Xabi nonsense - the online Daily Mail is claiming that Real Madrid 'are threatening to walk away from negotiations to sign Xabi Alonso if Liverpool do not drop their £30million asking price today'.
Real are apparently only willing to offer £23m, rising to £25.5m, for the Spaniard and Liverpool are only willing to compromise by £2m.
Just when we thought the sodding deal might be done...
11.00: We told you there might be signings today and here's the first - Pompey have given a deal to former Southampton keeper Antti Niemi. Woo-hoo.
10.38: Sebastien Bassong wants out of Newcastle (that much we already knew) and wants into Spurs (according to Sky Sports News). We certainly know that 'Arry wants a centre-half and Bassong would fit the bill.
09.57: Poor Portsmouth could be about to wrap up two deals - a one-year loan for Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne and a two-year deal for Modeste M'Bami, who has enjoyed a successful trial at the club after being released by Marseille.
09.43: Moving away from Xabi for a moment, Italian newspaper Tuttosport are claiming that AC Milan are preparing a £30m bid for Cesc Fabregas. And get this nugget...they claim that Arsene Wenger is willing to sell the little Spaniard.
Now we remember Martin Samuel writing a curious column earlier this summer saying that whispers were that Arsenal were ready to sell, but we presumed his destination would be Spain rather than Italy.
09.21: With Xabi on his way, Liverpool need a new midfielder, and Steven Defour has waved his hand in the air and shouted 'Me! Me! Me!'
He's quoted in The Daily Mail as saying: "I have an agreement with Standard Liege that I could go to a top club, and Liverpool fit the bill."
And, probably lurking in the shadows in a nefarious manner, his agent has had his say too.
Mr Paul Stefani said: "Steven's name has been mentioned not only at Real Madrid, but also at Liverpool - they are looking at him too.
"Normally he would stay for another year, but nobody could say no to clubs like those - and Liege would not stand in his way."
09.19: Good news for Phil Brown now - looks like someone finally wants to move to Hull.
And that someone is Cardiff striker Ross McCormack. He said in The Daily Mail: "I would definitely be interested, Hull are in the Premier League.
"When you're a young boy all you want to do is play in the Premier League, so if a club wants to give you that chance then it would be hard to turn down."
08.45: Word from our old friends the Spanish papers now, and they claim Xabi Alonso's move is edging close, oh so close.
Catalan rag Sport claims this morning that an announcement will be made in the next few days by Real, and that announcement will include the words 'Xabi', 'Alonso' and 'signed'.
If they get their fingers out then the deal will be sealed in time for Xabi to join Real on their pre-season tour to America next week.
08.34: The Gossip Column is up, and it contains word on which Chelsea striker is signing for Arsenal, which midfielders are going to replace Xabi Alonso, and which Joleon Lescott is going to force through a move from Everton to Manchester City. Oh, ruined the suspense on that last one a little.
08.06: Morning everyone. Get this - some stuff might actually happen today.
Darren Bent's move to Sunderland looks all but done, while the Swiss FA reckon Phillipe Senderos is off to Everton, and Blackburn have definitely signed Franco di Santo on loan from Chelsea, and have almost completed a deal for Croatian striker Nikola Kalinic.
