CAMPBELL PROUD TO LIFT CUP

Posted 17/05/08 17:51

Sol Campbell has spoken of his pride at being able to lift the FA Cup as captain of Portsmouth.

Campbell was part of the Pompey side which ground out a 1-0 victory over Cardiff in a memorable day for the South Coast club at Wembley Stadium.

The former Arsenal and Tottenham defender has won the competition on two previous occasions with the Gunners, and had skippered Spurs to League cup success in the past, but believes that leading his steam-mates to collect the famous trophy was one of the highlights of his career.

"It was a privilege," he told Sky Sports.

"To lift the cup any time is, but being the captain it's brilliant, you can't describe it.

"It's a fantastic feeling and it puts a stamp on the season. It's unbelievable for us really. And also we're in Europe as well now which is brilliant."

The England international was also quick to praise Pompey boss Harry Redknapp after the experienced coach claimed his first piece of silverware in a 25-year managerial career

"The gaffer has done well and assembled a great team together so I'm pleased for him as well, he's done well and gets the best out of players," said Campbell.

Campbell's fellow defender Herman Hreidarsson was also ecstatic to have finally got his hands on the trophy after being forced to wait for what seemed like an eternity for the game to come around.

"It's been a long time coming," he said.

"We've been waiting for this game for a while, we fancied our chances but it's a massive relief to have won it.

"They played well, but we had a few chances and got 1-0 up."

The Icelandic full-back was also left in no doubt that glory under the Wembley arch represented his finest moment in football.

"By a mile," he said.

"It's fantastic."
