ZARAGOZA DOWN ON DRAMATIC FINAL DAY

Posted 18/05/08 19:28
EmailPrintSave

Real Zaragoza became the third team to be relegated from the Primera Liga this season as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Real Mallorca.

Zaragoza began the day in the last of the relegation places so needed a positive result to have a chance of overhauling Osasuna, Recreativo Huelva or Real Valladolid.

They fell behind in in the 15th minute to Daniel Guiza's strike, but Ricardo Oliveira threw the visitors a lifeline 10 minutes after the break.

Goals from Pierre Webo and Gonzalo Castro all but killed off the game, but Zaragoza continued to fight and pulled another back through Oliveira.

With defeat came relegation, a stunning collapse from a side who qualified for Europe after finishing sixth last season - a feat Mallorca just failed to emulate as Racing Santander beat Osasuna 1-0 to take the final UEFA Cup spot.

Ivan Bolado scored the only goal of the game to take Racing into Europe, though the loss did not prove costly for Osasuna because of Zaragoza's defeat.

Recreativo Huelva and Real Valladolid, who drew 1-1, also avoided the drop.

Valladolid put themselves in a position of safety when they took the lead shortly before half-time through Joseba Llorente.

Recreativo equalised right at the death through Javi Guerrero but in the end the result was academic.

Champions Real Madrid completed their season in style with a 5-2 win over relegated Levante at the Bernabeu.

There had been serious doubts about whether the game would even go ahead with Levante's playing staff announcing earlier this week that they were to go on an indefinite strike due to unpaid wages.

But that strike was called off earlier on Sunday and Madrid were subsequently able to celebrate their title success with a three-point haul, the goals coming from Ruud van Nistelrooy (two), Sergio Ramos (two) and Wesley Sneijder.

Madrid were presented the trophy in an elaborate ceremony after the game.

Deportivo La Coruna advanced to the Intertoto Cup despite losing 2-0 at home to Villarreal.

Goals from Matias Fernandez and Guillermo Franco secured a 24th win of the season for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Michael Laudrup's stint as Getafe coach came to an uninspiring end as his troops were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Real Betis.

Manu del Moral gave Getafe the perfect start when he fired them in front with less than four minutes on the clock.

David Cortes missed a penalty on the hour mark and the let-off instilled confidence in Betis, with former Getafe striker Nano heading home a deserved equaliser in the 69th minute.

Valencia ended a turbulent season on a winning note as they won 3-1 against an Atletico Madrid side who had been assured of fourth spot and a Champions League place prior to kick-off.

The 2002 and 2004 Spanish champions gave their supporters something to cheer thanks to two strikes from David Villa and an own goal from Atletico defender Giorgos Seitaridis.

Atletico pulled a goal back late on through star striker Sergio Aguero.

Espanyol's nightmare second half of the season came to a predictable end as the Barcelona-based side lost 3-1 at home to Almeria.

Felipe Melo put the visitors ahead just before the break in a game of little importance, before Albert Crusat made it two eight minutes after the interval.

Luis Garcia gave the home side hope with a goal five minutes later, but Espanyol's misery was compounded in the final minute by Veljko Paunovic.

Sevilla signed off in style with a 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao, despite falling behind to Aritz Aduriz's penalty after three minutes.

Frederic Kanoute equalised after 38 minutes, before three goals in the last 12 minutes from Seydou Keita, Kanoute and Jesus Navas completed the rout.

On Saturday, Barcelona showed their best and worst traits as they beat relegated Murcia 5-3 to confirm third place in Frank Rijkaard's last game in charge.

Giovani Dos Santos bagged a hat-trick after goals from Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry had put the visitors in front.

Murcia had taken a surprise lead before that through Juan Cruz Ochoa early on, but the visitors soon turned on the style in Rijkaard's last game as coach of Barcelona.

But after hitting five goals without reply, the Catalans relaxed once more and allowed the home side to strike back twice in the last ten minutes through Ivan Alonso's penalty and Abel Gomez's free-kick.
