DONATION JUST THE TICKET - RYAN

Posted 22/05/08 18:58
EmailPrintSave

Doncaster chairman John Ryan wishes the club's unsold Coca-Cola League One play-off final tickets could have been passed on to Leeds supporters.

Rovers have been unable to sell their full allocation for Sunday's all-Yorkshire showdown at Wembley, while Leeds, who sold out completely, have been criticised after thousands of their fans missed out.

The South Yorkshire club suspended the sale of their tickets at the Keepmoat Stadium on Thursday, due to the numbers of Leeds fans who had gathered at the ground in the hope of securing one.

Ryan said: "The situation is, both clubs were given 36,000. We were given too many and Leeds too few.

"They've got a fantastic fanbase. I think we sold 24,000 tickets, which is a good effort with us only having average gates of 8,000 this season.

"I would gladly have given Leeds the balance, or most of the balance, but the Football League wouldn't let us because of segregation issues which is a shame because part of Wembley will be empty when it should be full really, of Leeds fans."

A Football League spokesman confirmed Doncaster had requested a ticket allocation of 30,000 tickets, with the right to claim a further 5,000 if needed.

He said: "This meant that tickets would have to be split on a 50/50 basis between the two clubs.

"Once these allocations have been determined, unsold tickets cannot then be sold to fans of the other finalist due to the need to maintain segregation."

Looking ahead to the match, Ryan insisted he harboured no ill-feeling towards Leeds over their unsuccessful appeal against the 15-point deduction for breaking Football League rules on insolvency.

He even joked he would act as adjudicator for Leeds chairman Ken Bates and Football League chairman Brian Mawhinney.

Bates called for Mawhinney to resign following a three-man panel's decision to uphold the League's sanction following an extended tribunal last month.

Ryan added: "I think I'm sat between Ken (Bates) and Lord Mawhinney, so it should be interesting shouldn't it?

"I'm just staying neutral on that one. There's no ill-feeling hanging over from my part, not at all.

"Ken Bates does his best for Leeds United and I do my best for Doncaster Rovers.

"With the 15 points, I had no real issue with that. I didn't even go down for the vote, but what I did have an issue with was the timing.

"When we were having to win one game to get promotion, to suddenly maybe have it grasped away from us and you can't have that in football."

Ryan took control of Doncaster 10 years ago when he replaced predecessor Ken Richardson, who was jailed for a bungled attempt to burn down former ground Belle Vue,

and got the club back into the Football League.

"Five years ago we were in the Conference and Leeds were in the Champions League probably then, but it just shows what a leveller football can be," he said.

"It's well known I dreamt we'd play Leeds in the play-off final and the dream said we'd win 2-1, so I hope it all comes true.

"It's amazing that so much has come true so far. It would be no disaster if we didn't win through. I'd be very confident we'd get promotion next season."
