ANNAN WIN SFL PLACE

Posted 03/07/08 15:03

Annan Athletic have been admitted to the Scottish Football League after winning a vote to replace Gretna.

At a meeting at Hampden this afternoon, the 29 SFL clubs voted in favour of the East of Scotland League team being invited to join the Irn-Bru Third Division.

Spartans, Edinburgh City, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers had also applied to take the place left vacant by Gretna, who went out of business after being relegated from the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

With a minimum of 15 votes required to gain entry to the SFL, three rounds of voting were needed before Annan's place was confirmed.

They polled 17 votes in the final round, with Cove Rangers their closest challengers with 12 votes.

One-time favourites Spartans dropped out of the running after the second round after amassing just six votes.

Annan chairman Henry McLelland said: "It's just sunk in but it's been a long time coming.

"We've not been working towards this for only a few months - we've been working for this since we played Stranraer in 1979.

"We have been rewarded for all our work since then."

Annan failed with their last bid to join the SFL when they lost out to Peterhead and Elgin City in January 2000.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir said: "On behalf of the working party, I would like to say how impressed we were by all five clubs.

"We welcome Annan to the Scottish Football League, where they will play a Challenge Cup game on July 26 and then their first league game on August 2."

10 Things You Need To Know About Annan Athletic

  • Annan were formed in 1942 and have played in the Dumfries & District Youth Welfare League, Dumfries & District Junior Football Association, Carlisle & District League, South of Scotland League and, most recently, East of Scotland League.

  • Their home ground is Galabank in Annan, which has a capacity of 2,000. Their previous home was Mafeking Park.

  • Galabank boasts a modern 426-seat stand - but no floodlights. However, funding is in place for the installation of floodlights by August.

  • Annan had a blank season in 1951-52 because the then Secretary of the Scottish Junior Association, John Kinnear, would not release the club from membership of the SJA.

  • Harry Cairney is in his second spell as the club's manager. He first took on the job in December 2003, before returning in season 2006-07 after a stint at Arbroath.

  • Annan failed in their previous attempt to join the SFL in 2000. They were one of nine clubs who applied for entry, with Highland League teams Peterhead and Elgin City winning the vote.

  • Of the five clubs who applied to join the SFL this time around, Annan are geographically closest to Gretna, the club who created the vacancy after going out of business last season.

  • Former Gretna boss Davie Irons is also a former Annan manager. The clubs also have ex-players Colin McMenamin and Ryan McGuffie in common.

  • Simon Tucker holds the club record for the most goals scored in a single game after finding the net nine times in a 14-1 win over Abbey Vale in a South of Scotland League match in 1997.

  • The club's biggest win came four years ago when they thrashed Newton Stewart 18-0 in an East of Scotland League match. Top scorer on the night was Ross Kerr with six goals.
