Newcastle have reportedly turned down the chance to sign German international Torsten Frings, who is now eyeing a move to Arsenal.
According to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: 'Frings' agent spoke to United executive director of football Dennis Wise yesterday and offered him the 31-year-old Werder Bremen star, who can operate anywhere across midfield.
'But sources in Germany say that Frings' people did not receive much encouragement and are now looking to offload their man to Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger having lost Mathieu Flamini and now Alexander Hleb.'
Quite why Frings' agents would go to Newcastle ahead of Arsenal is unclear, but United's reason to turn down Frings (his age) is also likely to be a stumbling block in any interest from Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal famously have a policy of only offering short-term deals to players over 30, but with a dearth of defensive midfielders on the market, perhaps they could make an exception to the rule.

"Jonah, it's because your team is SH!TE. Just kidding, but you can't tee up a line like that and not expect an Arsenal fan to take a swing at it... "

"another entirely random story with probably no truth to it at all but sure everyone else is throwing in their tuppance worth so i might as well do it too. good player, would add some 'steel', hate that word by the way(reminds me of muppets like terry and rio (aka kemal from big bro))...be a good foil for cesc, allow him to dictate the game and move forward knowing frings can clean up behind him"

"Yes, sign the German!! The Arse are signing crap at the moment anyway, so they might as well buy him. You could do worse though, you could be interested in Gareth Barry. Hang on a minute.... Kiss goodbye the league already Arse Wenger. Has he finally stopped buying decent players and gone senile?"

"Frings is an excellent player and just what they need, although won't happen due to his age. I don't get these Alonso rumours, he is a deep lying play maker, a superb passer but one paced, he is hardly a direct replacement for Flamini, excellent at screening his defence, breaking up play and also have the energy to get forward."
