CROUCH STARS IN POMPEY WIN

Peter Crouch appeared as a second-half substitute as Portsmouth came from behind to win 3-1 in a friendly at Swindon.

Crouch, who rejoined the club in an £11million move from Liverpool last week, entered the fray with his side already 2-1 up and saw Danijel Subotic wrap up the win.

Swindon had taken a deserved early lead from the penalty spot, Simon Cox on target after being felled by Noe Pamarot.

Hermann Hreidarsson equalised for the FA Cup winners with Jermain Defoe putting them ahead with a penalty after a foul on trialist OJ Korma.

Defender David Wheater scored a late equaliser to earn Middlesbrough a 2-2 draw at York City in their opening pre-season friendly.

Gareth Southgate's side appeared to be heading for defeat at KitKat Crescent until centre-half Wheater popped up at the far post.

After a scoreless first half, Southgate changed all 10 of his outfield players at the break and was soon rewarded when Boro took the lead.

Winger Stewart Downing burst into the box and played a low ball across the face of goal which was turned home by Jonathan Franks.

However, York rallied and drew level when Martyn Woolford broke clear and, after his shot was saved by Brad Jones, the highly-rated teenager Adam Boyes finished through the keeper's legs.

Jones was given no chance when York then grabbed the lead as reported Barnsley target Onome Sodje hammered the ball beyond the Boro shot-stopper.

But York were denied a notable pre-season victory when Wheater arrived at the back post to squeeze the ball inside the post.

Stoke stepped up preparations for their top-flight return with a 3-0 victory over amateurs Newcastle Town in their first pre-season friendly.

Richard Cresswell opened the scoring for the Potters after 16 minutes with Jon Parkin doubling the advantage with a 30-yard shot that went in off the post.

Adam Rooney wrapped up the win at the Lyme Valley Stadium after boss Tony Pulis fielded a different XI in the second half.

Goals in each half from Chris Killen and Barry Robson gave Celtic a 2-0 victory over Southampton in Claus Lundekvam's testimonial.

Killen gave the Scottish Premier League champions a 26th-minute lead when he finished low, left-footed, following good work by Scott McDonald.

And Barry Robson doubled the advantage emphatically from the penalty spot in the 67th minute after Georgios Samaras - who earlier this week sealed a permanent move from Manchester City - had been brought down in the box by Andrew Surman.

Samaras went close to a third goal before former Saints favourite Matthew Le Tissier came on in the 76th minute, to the delight of the majority of the crowd of 18,664.

Second Division Peterhead ran out convincing 4-0 winners in their friendly with Bank of Scotland Premier League Aberdeen.

The Dons were without Zander Diamond and fielded an unfamiliar back four as they were overrun by the Blue Toon at Balmoor.

Craig Gunn and Martin Bavidge put the hosts on their way in the first half with Bobby Mann and Konrad Kozminski completing the scoring late on.

Elliott Bennett and Stephen Elliott both struck twice as Coca-Cola Championship Wolves won their friendly at Non-League Chasetown 4-1.

Bennett put Wolves ahead after four minutes with Elliott doubling the advantage soon after.

The amateurs hit back through Chris Birch but Elliott added Wolves' third before the break and Bennett hit the fourth late on.

Jamie Mackie scored both Plymouth goals as the Pilgrims twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Kidderminster while Bristol City were beaten 1-0 by Rushden & Diamonds in Portugal.

Veteran striker Andy Cole almost netted on his bow for Nottingham Forest when he struck the crossbar in a 2-1 win over Offenbach Kickers.

Forest's goals came courtesy of Garath McCleary and Arron Davies, while Rob Earnshaw and Guy Moussi also played.
