ADEBAYOR REFUSES TO COMMIT TO ARSENAL

Posted 22/07/08 07:08
EmailPrintSave

Emmanuel Adebayor has reportedly refused to assure Arsene Wenger that he intends to stay at Arsenal for the forthcoming season.

The Togo striker reported back for training yesterday and afterwards held talks with Wenger. It was the first time the pair had spoken since Adebayor indicated he would be happy to leave North London.

According to The Guardian, 'The Togo international did not ask for a transfer but, having been told by Wenger that Arsenal will not stretch their wage structure to keep him - he currently earns £35,000 a week and is believed to want closer to three times that to remain at the London club - Adebayor did not commit his future to the Gunners either.'

Further discussions are expected to be held over the coming week during the Gunners' tour of Hungary and Austria - the squad, including Adebayor, flew out of England last night.

"To suggest that Adebayor doesn't deserve a pay rise is very disingenuous. He scored plus 30 goals last season as well as played magnificently, yet most gunners and the manager don't believe he is deserving of a pay rise. If Adebayor is valued by arsenal in the range of plus 20 mil, then why is he not paid a salary that reflects that valuation. Frankly, any player that's worth over 12 million quids should be paid more than 35,000 a week. Seriously, the players he is going to be asked to outshine are being paid significantly more than he would, so where is the motivation to even bother. If you want quality you will have to pay for it. I am embarrass that our club(arsenal) are paying our top players such paltry salary. I am not sure how many better talent we will be able to attract or keep under such a system. Call a spade a spade, I have to support Adebayor's stance on this one. All this amount to BULLSH*T."

"Ifctrev: Are you saying Arsenal should just compete with Chelski when agreeing new contracts? I don't know where you've been for the past 4 years mate but Chelski are in a world of their own when it comes to spending money and any player who thinks that is the norm needs a slap to bring them back to the real world. It's times like this when we can say, well done Mr Abramovic - take a bow son - you've done your bit to ruin English football."

"Geddy...u need to realize the fact that wenger always believes in bringing fresh blood to the club and not some todays superstars who are going to be forgotten washed up jocks in a few years..arsenal didnt win any trophies but they did lead the premier league at one time..and if u remember we were hard done in the champions trophy..the penalties that were given were highly conflicting and biased..so we dont need to jump over to man u just because we didnt win any silverware...and about adebayor..the guy is not loyal to arsenal..if he wants to go then perhaps he shouls be shown the door by wenger..."

VMde

"Mrs Makaveli you are truly an idiot. a great striker carries his team, sometimes single-handedly, to silverware. Ade has never done that. henry did it season after season. even in the current arsenal side there are players who, if they keep fit, can do better than him. when he signed his current contract last year he WAS NOT a 30-goal striker. he was a 7-goal striker, which is what his current wage represents. he's now being offered more, but there's NO WAY that arsenal or any reasonable club should give him 100k. "

"I wouldnt worry about this article to much, just because Ade has not confirmed he wants to remain at Arsenal doesnt mean he is after a pay rise or a way out either. Before he went back to Togo (or possible Nigeria) he made several attempts to prove his loyal to Arsenal. Ive only seen 1 interview where i was worried he might leave and that was again after he said he wanted to say. I wouldnt believe half the rumors and stories you hear on football websites unless you hear it from the official source Arsenal website take it all with a pinch of salt"

"totally agree with Tobasco1982, Personally I think that If he does not Shut up and get on with it , He should be left to rot in the reserves for 3 years and then P*ss of on a free."

lfctrev

"I can understand why he wants this kind of money, look at Wayne Bridge at Chelsea, he signed an ext to his contract worth £80,000 a week....why wudnt Adebayor want more money when 'subs' off other teams are earning nearly 3 times he wages....Arsenal need to break this wage structure or they will continue to lose players every season, and Wenger cant be relying on youngsters coming in every seasons to fill the voids"

Geddy76

"Mr (or Mrs?) Makaveli. What was Thierry when he joined? A kid. How long have you been a 'fan' of Arsenal? Do you understand the following, 'Arsene Wenger is Arsenal's most successful manager'. If you want trophies so bad, support Manchester United."

deanoafc

"If he wants to go let him go....He is a great player but is not worth that sort of salary. It makes me sick."
