After failing to sign a single player since the season ended three months ago, Everton are poised to spend heavily on three new acquisitions this week.
While the long-anticipated arrival of Alan Smith from Newcastle will hardly set pulses racing, news that Everton have agreed a deal with CSKA Moscow to sign Vágner Love should quell growing unrest amongst the club's supporters. The striker is expected to be signed on a season-long loan deal with a view to a £15m permanent transfer next summer.
The Times reports that David Moyes has also been successful with a £6m bid for Rennes midfielder Stéphane M'Bia and 'Everton's spending could reach nearly £40 million if Moyes succeeds in his efforts to sign João Moutinho, the Sporting Lisbon and Portugal mid-field player. Sporting have rejected bids of £11.8 million and £13 million, with Everton likely to have to pay about £16 million, even though there are no guarantees that the Portuguese club will let the highly rated 21-year-old leave at that price. Filipe Soares Franco, the Sporting chairman, is proving a tough negotiator and is thought to be demanding at least £20 million for Moutinho, who impressed for Portugal at Euro 2008.'

"I really to laugh at these Reds fans when commenting on what Everton need to "at least secure 5th" It's been 18 years and in excess of 300 million spent just to keep finishing in the top 4. Do Liverpool not have amibtions of winning the league again. FerdinandTowers you seem to be a great expert as to what Moyes needs to do how about you pick up the phone and give Benitez a call. He seems to need you more. "

"As a red, I've smiled when listening to how worried my blue nosed mates sound at break time in work. Although I feel a little bit sorry for them (not really though). Moyes has done a great job to get Everton were they are now AND THEN the Board don't back him up with the funds to go further. If Everton wanted to sell up and find a Billionaire, they should of been looking straight after Christmas in my opinion. For Everton's sake, You need 3 or 4 quality signings (not necessarily expensive ones)to at least secure 5th place."

"Sorry not Ireland. Michael Johnson they'll go after now he's snubbed a new contract with City"

"I bet the bluenoses will actually sign Alan Smith, Ireland from City and some unknown foreigner. I can't see Everton spending £40m if the owner is looking to sell. "
