Van Persie - groin trouble.

MIXED INJURY NEWS FOR WENGER

Posted 23/04/09 17:49

Robin van Persie and Gael Clichy will miss the first leg of Arsenal's Champions League clash with Manchester United next week.

Dutch striker van Persie has groin trouble while Clichy remains sidelined with a back injury.

But Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, defender Johan Djourou (knee) and striker Emmanuel Adebayor could all be in contention for Sunday's clash with Middlesbrough.

"We will rotate a little bit again, but we have no major injuries from Liverpool," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online.

"Manuel Almunia was in full training on Thursday and we will see how he responds. Djourou was in full training also so we will see how he is too. Both could come back into the squad.

"It is not enough training to say [for sure] yet, we need 48 hours more. Emmanuel Adebayor should come back into training on Saturday. He could be in the squad.

"But Robin van Persie is definitely out for Sunday and for Manchester United.

"Gael Clichy could be back for the second Manchester United game. He has a scan on Monday. We'll go from there. He has a chance to be back in full training next week."

"I am optimistic...Arsenal will make it through"

"fla5hboy: Oh stop it! Your coming accross all sportsmanlike now! It's going to be tense that's for sure. Let's just hope that whoever gets to the final, finishes the job on either Chelsea or Barca."

fla5hboy

"Yeah ok maybe a bit short sighted and knowing my luck he'll pop up and score a hattrick now but i was just trying to get a bit of light hearted banter going. All the best for the game and I'm sure we'll both be on here on Wednesday offering our pearls of wisdom again."

Cesc_Bomb

"fla5hboy: It sounded like you were having a dig at Adebayor. I'm the first to admit that he's not at his best performance wise but he can still score goals as he has proved in recent games. To say he will provide NO threat to United seems short sighted. I think it's going to be a tough two games but hopefully entertaining."

Little_Dutch

"Bendtner is a decent fourth choice striker but no more than that at the moment. Gooners are very keen to get on his back because he's the anti flavour of the month at the moment, as Song and Eboue were before him. But 13 goals this season is not a bad total from 25 starts and puts him miles ahead of other fourth choice strikers such as Welbeck, Harewood, Stoch and El Zhar."

"Thank you Powderblue_Kes."

"Cesc_bomb thats an unsuccessful attempt at an insult there coz I agree with you, Berba is a big ham too. In fact I'd probably rather have Adebayor in my team than him!! At least big ady tries. I wasnt having a go I just say things the way i see it, which is why i said Van P is 1st class. anyway, I'm not sure that Arsenal have more class than Utd at the minute as you havent really been at the races this year and you definitely have weaknesses in your current squad which Liverpool exploited on Tuesday night. If all your squad was fit then yes I'd be worried but with so many players out and with Arshavin not able to play then as I said I'm confident we'll do enough at Old Trafford to put us in a great position to go through. Especially now that we seem to be out of the current rut we've been in. I respect your optimism though."

fla5hboy

"I'm suprised Wenger hasn't made a bid for Saha, he's probably an arsenal type of player, spends most of his time in the treatment room! I feel your frustration wellsers. AW invests a lot of his time bringing in youth to the team and developing players but these young lads aren't just developing their ability they're also developing their bodies and maybe this makes them more susceptable to injury.

what are you gooners honest opinion about Bendtner?? I see a lot of class at Arsenal but when i see Bendtner i dont see it?? I dont know whether I'm just a biased Utd fan and I'm missing something but reading some of the comments made by you on here it looks as though a lot of you actually rate him. Discuss...

"fla5hboy: "Adebayor is just a big ham who will be provide no threat to Rio or Vid" Great insight there. I'm sure he'll provide more of a threat than £30 million flop Berbatov. And we'll see how effective Rooney will be as well because lets face it, he's hardly prolific is he? Arsenal managed to beat United earlier in the season without both Adebayor & Van Persie so I wouldn't get your hopes up. It's going to be a tough two games but I'm sure our class will prevail in the end."

"Wenger buys light-footed, lightweight, dancing midfielders who rely on technique and pace to beat their opponent(s) and not burly, powerhouse players who like to go into a challenge - that's why so many of his 'forwards' and attacking players are always injured.

RoSICKy is a dud. Wenger should just sell him and move on. he makes Darren 'Sicknote' Anderton look like the Terminator. Arguably, Wenger's belief that RoSICKy would be fit to play a part for Arsenal this season has cost us a new replacement signing in midfield at the beginning of the season (or Arshavin coming earlier maybe) and potentially a trophy. RvP seemed to be getting over his injury problems this season, but is still not the type of player to play every week without injuring himself. Eduardo is back from a long lay off and will inevitably take a few knocks as his body gets back to peak fitness.

The last players who could tackle/play every week without breaking their bread stick legs where: Gilberto, Flamini, Parlour, Petit, Keown. Alas, now Wenger seems to favour pace and technique over power and resilience/recovery. Only Clichy seems up to the job.

As an Arsenal fan, I'm fed up with waiting on players like Diaby, Rosicky, Djouhrou etc. to get fit and make an impact. Sell them on or cancel their contracts and buy some players who are capable of playing every week (Lampard, Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Alonso, Barry etc. all play every week for their respective clubs). If someone came in with good money (£20m) for RvP I'd even be seriously tempted to cash in. He's not exactly played much over the last five years (although his goals to games ratio is good) and Arshavin, Eduardo, Walcott and Vela can all play in the 'hole' if required.

It can't be the physios/medical team as they look after the England squad on international duty - so presumably they are the best available in this country?

Wellsers - London"
