SPL FINAL-DAY CLOCKWATCH

Posted 24/05/09 15:36
EmailPrintSave

  • All times BST.

1458: Rangers win the SPL 2008/09 title - their 52nd - by four points from Celtic, with Hearts finishing in third place. Aberdeen pip Dundee United to fourth while Hibs ending the season in sixth.

1457: FULL TIME: ABERDEEN 2 HIBS 1. Aberdeen take fourth place and qualify for next season's Europa League!

1455: Kenny Miller has become only the fourth player ever to win the title with both sides of the Old Firm!

1455: Wild celebrations for Rangers after winning their first title since 2005!

1453: FULL TIME: CELTIC 0 HEARTS 0. Rangers win the title by four points as Celtic fail to beat Hearts at Parkhead!

1451: FULL TIME: DUNDEE UTD 0 RANGERS 3. Rangers are the champions!

1450: Free-kick to Celtic on the edge of the box, can they find a winner against Hearts?

1445: Brilliant save by Alexander to deny Gary Kenneth a consolation goal for Dundee Utd as he tips over his looping effort.

1442: Lafferty gets a standing ovation as he is replaced by Lee McCulloch. At Celtic Park, Willo Flood replaces Scott Brown.

1441: Cheers around Tannadice as the helicopter flies overhead with the SPL trophy in it. Nine minutes to go.

1439: Good ball in by McGeady but Maloney's header floats just past the post. Celtic are heading for a final-day draw against Hearts as Jonathan Stewart replaces Zaliukas.

1438: Maloney bursts forward from the left for Celtic and his shot from a tight angle is turned round the post by Kello.

1436: Novo should have made it 4-0 as he holds off two United defenders but shoots straight at Zaluska.

1435: Novo sees Zaluska off his line and goes for an ambitious chip from 25 yards out but the ball flies over the bar.

1434: RED CARD - Ian Murray is shown red for Hibs at Aberdeen and that could well seal the Dons' place in the Europa League next season.

1433: Celtic go close twice to an opening goal as Kello first makes an impressive save from Scott Brown's shot before turning the ball behind from the corner.

1433: Barry Ferguson comes on for Rangers to replace Miller.

1430: Twenty minutes to go and Rangers will be champions. The only question now is who takes the final Europa League place - at the moment it's Aberdeen.

1427: Scott McDonald curls the ball high over the bar and that's his last contribution as he is replaced by Shaun Maloney.

1426: Novo does indeed come on to replace Boyd.

1425: Boyd has picked up a knock and it looks like Nacho Novo - the man who scored for Rangers the last time they won the league - is getting ready to come on.

1422: Nakamura's free-kick is punched clear by Kello. It looks as if Celtic have accepted their fate now, it's so flat at Parkhead.

1420: A looping header from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink lands on top of the bar and that just about sums up their afternoon as Calum Elliot is replaced by Christian Nade.

1418: The Rangers fans are making some amount of noise, this title win has been a long time coming for them. That's in stark contrast to Parkhead where you could hear a pin drop.

1415: McGeady fires wide from around eight yards out after a good cut-back by Darren O'Dea and it's still 0-0 against Hearts - but it won't matter with Rangers 3-0 up at Tannadice.

1414: Unless Hibs get an equaliser, defeat for United will see them lose out on fourth place to Aberdeen.

1413: GOAL - DUNDEE UTD 0 RANGERS 3. It's all over, Rangers are surely the champions now as Boyd scores from close range from Whittaker's cross. The title is heading to Ibrox for the first time since 2005!

1412: Arvydas Novikovas comes on for David Templeton for Hearts.

1411: Rangers still look in complete control at Tannadice - will that change with the introduction of Francisco Sandaza for United?

1408: But Celtic do win a corner, although it comes to nothing.

1407: Very flat at Parkhead at the beginning of the second half as Celtic continue to launch high balls forward in the hope of breaking the deadlock against Hearts.

1405: Dundee Utd, Celtic and Aberdeen get the action restarted on the final day of the SPL season.

1352: For Celtic, they look really sluggish against a well-organised Hearts side. They have had a few chances but will need to pick up the pace if they are to get the three points, although it looks like it will be academic in the chase for the title.

1352: Rangers have picked the best time to turn in arguably their best performance for some time. They started the game at such a high tempo, Dundee Utd just couldn't cope and the Gers grabbed an early goal. United had plenty of possesion but failed to trouble Rangers' defence too much and Mendes' strike could well be the clincher.

    1349: HALF TIME: Dundee Utd 0 Rangers 2, Celtic 0 Hearts 0, Aberdeen 2 Hibs 1.

1349: GOAL - ABERDEEN 2 HIBS 1. Or are they?! Derek Riordan nets for Hibs and they are back in the game on the stroke of half-time.

1349: GOAL - ABERDEEN 2 HIBS 0. Charlie Mulgrew curls a free-kick into the net and Aberdeen are heading for the final Europa League spot at the expense of Dundee Utd.

1348: Hearts go close to netting at Celtic Park but Caldwell clears off the line from Calum Elliot.

1347: GOAL - DUNDEE UTD 0 RANGERS 2. That could be the goal that secures the title for Rangers and it's Pedro Mendes with a superb left-footed shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.

1347: Dods is booked but he could easily have been sent off twice in the last few moments as he slides in high over the ball on Maurice Edu on the edge of the box. A terrible challenge.

1346: Darren Dods aims what looks like a deliberate arm in the face of Boyd as he chases a through ball. The United man is lucky the referee did not spot that one. Meanwhile Loovens is back on for Celtic.

1345: Loovens doesn't look like he will be able to continue after being helped off the field for treatment.

1344: Glenn Loovens has taken a nasty-looking head knock after colliding with Kello at a corner. He looks in real pain.

1343: Nervous times for Hearts as Zaliukas heads over his own bar for another corner before Brown blasts wildly over the bar.

1342: Two glorious chances for Rangers. First Boyd's shot is headed off the line from just eight yards and behind for corner, from which Bougherra heads over from close range. Should have been 2-0 to Rangers, despite all United's possession.

1342: A pretty wild challenge by Scott Brown on Lee Wallace provokes an angry reaction from the Hearts man. Both players receive a ticking-off.

1341: David Goodwillie stays down after a late challenge from Bougherra but he looks like he will be OK.

1340: Another shot at goal for Celtic, this time by Scott Brown, who cuts inside the box well but fires his left-footed effort high over the bar.

1339: Not too much happening at Tannadice and that suits Rangers as they have the lead.

1338: Celtic are piling on the pressure as Nakamura forces Kello into another decent save low down.

1337: As it stands - Dundee Utd 0 Rangers 1, Cetlic 0 Hearts 0, Aberdeen 1 Hibs 0. If resutls stay the same, Rangers win the league, and Aberdeen take the last Europa League place.

1336: Paul Hartley's deflected shot is comfortably gathered by Kello down at his post. Still Celtic 0 Hearts 0.

1335: Marius Zaliukas' shot from 25 yards out is fumbled slightly by Artur Boruc but the Pole gathers at the second attempt.

1334: The Parkhead crowd are getting frustrated and howls of derision come from the stand as Georgios Samaras fails to chase down a long ball forward from Caldwell.

1333: Great corner into the box from Paul Dixon and Alexander has to make a smart stop to prevent the ball going in. Rangers still lead 1-0.

1331: Optimistic shouts for handball from the Celtic support as the ball comes off the arm of Robbie Nielson in the box but play is waved on. That looked the right decision.

1330: Plenty of possession for Dundee Utd but they can't find a way through the Rangers defence at the moment.

1328: Aiden McGeady goes for goal from 20 yards out and Kello does well to turn the ball onto the post and behind for a corner. McGeady is Celtic's only attacking threat at the moment. The corner comes to nothing though as Kello gathers Nakamura's delivery.

1326: Celtic are struggling against Hearts, they can't string more than a few passes together and Gordon Strachan looks a hugely frustrated figure on the touchline.

1324: A massive roar goes round Celtic Park - they think Dundee Utd have scored! They should have been cheering a goal for themselves though a moment ago but Scott McDonald missed a glorious chance. Still 0-0.

1321: Great chance for United as David Goodwillie gets in behind the Rangers defence and glides past Bougherra but Sasa Papac gets across from left-back and makes a terrific last-gasp block.

1318: Celtic are enjoying the bulk of possession against Hearts but are struggling to break down the Jambos' well-organised defence.

1316: GOAL - ABERDEEN 1 HIBS 0. Lee Miller fires the Dons in front - and that means they would pip Dundee Utd to fourth place if results stay the same.

1315: But Dundee Utd show what they can do when they go forward though David Robertson's free header from ten yards out is easily held by Neil Alexander.

1314: Sasa Papac's long ball ends up in the arms of Lukasz Zaluska. It's all Rangers, United can't get out of their own half at the moment.

1312: Still 0-0 at Pittodrie between Aberdeen and Hibs - with United losing, a win for Aberdeen would take them into the final Europa League spot.

1310: Kenny Miller blasts over from 12 yards out for Rangers. They are on fire at the moment, Dundee Utd are struggling.

1308: Scott McDonald's shot is easily held by Kello as Celtic go looking for a goal at Parkhead against Hearts. As it stands though it doesn't matter - if Rangers win they are champions.

1306: GOAL - DUNDEE UTD 0 RANGERS 1. What a start for Rangers! It's that man Lafferty with the goal! Steven Davis sets up Kris Boyd who turns and crosses for Lafferty, who slots the ball into the back of the net. Rangers are heading for the title as it stands!

1305: Nakamura scuffs his shot and it's an easy take for Marian Kello in the Hearts goal.

1304: Free-kick to Celtic 25 yards from goal against Hearts. Shunsuke Nakamura is over it.

1302: Kyle Lafferty picks up the ball to a chorus of boos from the United fans after his play-acting antics last weekend. The Northern Ireland man hits his cross woefully out of play.

1300: The action is under way at Tannadice, Parkhead and Pittodrie.

1258: At Pittodrie, Aberdeen are 10/11 to get the win they need to have a chance of making the Europa League next season against Hibs, it's 12/5 the draw and 3/1 for an away win.

1257: If you fancy a flutter on the action at Tannadice, it's 6/1 on a shock home win, 11/4 the draw and 8/15 Rangers secure the win and the title.

1246: Celtic: Boruc, Hinkel, Caldwell, Loovens, O'Dea, Nakamura, Scott Brown, Hartley, McGeady, McDonald, Samaras. Subs: Mark Brown, Crosas, Conroy, Vennegoor of Hesselink, Maloney, Naylor, Flood. Hearts: Kello, Neilson, Karipidis, Mrowiec, Lee Wallace, Jonsson, Michael Stewart, Zaliukas, Obua, Elliot, Templeton. Subs: Balogh, Tullberg, Nade, Thomson, Park, Johnny Stewart, Novikovas. Referee: C Thomson (Scotland)

1242: Dundee Utd: Zaluska, Kovacevic, Wilkie, Dods, Dixon, Caddis, Buaben, Gomis, Conway, David Robertson, Goodwillie. Subs: McGovern, Dillon, Grainger, Scott Robertson, Sandaza, Swanson, Kenneth. Rangers: Alexander, Whittaker, Weir, Bougherra, Papac, Davis, Mendes, Edu, Lafferty, Boyd, Miller. Subs: McGregor, Ferguson, Novo, McCulloch, Naismith, Fleck, Wilson. Referee: D McDonald (Scotland)

1241: The teams are in from Pittodrie - remember Aberdeen can still win a European place. Aberdeen: Langfield, Vidal, Severin, Mair, Mulgrew, Foster, McDonald, Duff, Aluko, Miller, Pawlett. Subs: Bossu, Wright, Maguire, Stewart, Paton, Clark, Ross. Hibernian: Ma-Kalambay, van Zanten, Jones, Murray, Chisholm, Rankin, Stevenson, Bamba, Thicot, Fletcher, Riordan. Subs: McNeil, O'Brien, Keenan, McCormack, Campbell, Cropley, Johansson. Referee: D Somers (Scotland)

1240: Betting news: Andy Clarke of Sky Bet says: "Celtic need a win if they are to pip Rangers to the title while Hearts have already finished third, but the 12/1 about an away win for Hearts at Celtic Park has proved too tempting, contributing to a large liability for Sky Bet. Celtic will look to Scott McDonald for the goals they need - he's 7/2 to opening the scoring."

1231: Reports coming from Celtic Park about a bust-up between Hearts majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov and boss Csaba Laszlo over team selection for today's game. However Laszlo says: "I always speak with the owner, but I am the one who decides who plays. I have a two-year contract and I am only thinking of planning for next season"

1230: Before we give you the rest of the teams here's how things stand: A win for Rangers gives them the title but failure to beat Dundee Utd coupled with a Celtic win takes the title to Parkhead. Dundee Utd need a point to secure a Europa Leauge place while Aberdeen will sneak in if United lose and they can beat Hibs. But if Hibs win at Pittodrie, they will leapfrog the Dons into fifth. Phew!

1225: The Rangers team - Alexander, Whittaker, Bougherra, Weir, Papac, Davis, Edu, Mendes, Lafferty, Boyd, Miller. SUBS: McGregor, Ferguson, McCulloch, Novo, Naismith,Fleck, Wilson.

1221: At Celtic Park, Darren O'Dea is back for Celtic in the only change for them while injury-hit Hearts make two changes. Full details on both games to follow.

1220: Early team news from Tannadice - Dundee United make three changes, while Rangers name the same side that beat Aberdeen 2-1 last weekend.
