FRANCE v ENGLAND MINUTE-BY-MINUTE

Posted 26/03/08 22:05
EmailPrintSave

Full-time: France 1 England 0

90+2 mins: The full-time whistle goes and England are defeated 1-0. Capello's men kept the ball quite well at times but really lacked penetration. Plenty to work on for the Italian coach.

90+2 mins: Barry's cross is headed clear but Cisse is caught offside as France counter.

90+1 mins: Barry's cross is too deep but Bentley retrieves it. Johnson tries to drive forward but is blocked off.

90 mins: Owen passes the ball straight out of play as he drops deep.

89 mins: Two minutes to add says the board.

88 mins: England are caught offside and France have a free-kick.

87 mins: Bentley's corner is cleared and France burst forward. Cisse outpaces Cole and, on the run, flicks a right-foot shot into the side-netting. James will claim he had it covered.

87 mins: Ribery surges forward and goes for goal but James dives to his right to make the stop. Bentley then thumps the ball forward for Owen and England win a corner.

86 mins: Johnson grimaces as he allows the ball to run out of play.

85 mins: Downing's cross is poor and Coupet makes the catch under no pressure at all.

84 mins: Bentley is starting to see a little more of the ball now but time is running out for England.

83 mins: Lovely feet by Crouch to take down Ferdinand's pass and keep England in possession. The ball is played to the far post by Bentley and France are rather hesitant when clearing Downing's header but eventually clear the danger.

82 mins: Owen drops deep and gifts the ball to Cisse. The former Liverpool striker, Cisse that is, tries an ambitious shot but it's blocked.

81 mins: Hargreaves gets back to stop Ribery getting in his cross.

81 mins: Anelka is replaced by Djibril Cisse, who gets a rough reception from the home crowd.

80 mins: Downing sets up Cole for a cross but the full-back's delivery is woeful again.

79 mins: England keep the ball but can't make any progress forward. They eventually inject some pace but Downing's cross is too near Coupet.

78 mins: Crouch turns Thuram and tries to thread a little ball through to Owen but the striker is well offside.

77 mins: Clerc's ball into the box can't pick out Anelka. France are finding gaps now.

76 mins: Ribery floors Downing to give England a free-kick but it's inside their own half.

75 mins: Nice play by Govou who flicks a clever pass inside. France eventually work the ball to Ribery but his shot is off target.

74 mins: The England fans refuse to join in a Mexican wave before bursting into song in an attempt to rouse their team, who seem to have gone to sleep.

73 mins: Lescott does well to muscle Anelka away from danger, allowing the ball to run out.

72 mins: England need a spark. Can anyone provide it?

71 mins: Ashley Cole, the only Cole on the pitch now so we'll call him just Cole from here on in, is penalised for a free-kick on Ribery.

71 mins: Anelka injects some urgency but pings a right-foot shot well wide of the post.

70 mins: The game's gone extremely quiet as have the crowd.

69 mins: England are just drifting a little bit here. Perhaps it's all the substitutions.

68 mins: Bentley shoves Malouda in the back and is told off by the ref. He escapes a booking though.

67 mins: Downing, Crouch and Hargreaves try to combine down the middle but it's all rather tight. England need some width.

66 mins: Owen nods down for Crouch but France intercept.

65 mins: Anelka shows some arrogant touches before Bentley piles in and concedes a corner which ends in an England free-kick for offside.

64 mins: Beckham's evening is over as he's replaced by David Bentley while Glen Johnson replaces Brown. France bring on Sidney Govou for Trezeguet.

63 mins: Ferdinand steps out to stop Malouda picking up Ribery's pass. Owen nods Beckham's pass into the path of Crouch who volleys way over the bar.

62 mins: Lovely crossfield ball from Beckham to Downing, whose touch is poor and he's closed down as he finally gets the cross in.

61 mins: Ribery and Anelka look to combine but England defend strongly.

60 mins: Beckham and James aren't on the same wavelength as France play a ball into the England box. Beckham does the right thing and clears into touch. Iffy judgement from the England goalkeeper there.

59 mins: James comes out of his area to kick area. He was under little pressure though.

58 mins: Downing cuts inside before feeding Ashley Cole. He has three men to pick out but the Chelsea left-back's delivery is terrible and Coupet makes an easy catch.

57 mins: Downing gets into the French penalty area but Coupet comes out to nick the ball away from him.

56 mins: Thuram shows his strength and experience to stop Barry in the box. France break and Abidal slices a poor effort wide of the post.

55 mins: Owen seems to be playing very deep with Crouch by far the furthest man forward.

54 mins: Anelka again looks dangerous as he picks up possession in the final third but this time he can't make anything of it.

53 mins: Anelka tries to feed Ribery, who appears to be being pulled back by Barry but no free-kick. Co-ordinated Gallic shrugs from the French coaching staff.

52 mins: It's been a lively start to the second half after the fairly measured opening 45 minutes.

51 mins: Malouda works space for a shot 25 yards out and thumps a low left-foot effort narrowly wide of James' post.

50 mins: Crouch knocks a header into the box but can't find a fellow red shirt. He's already causing problems though.

49 mins: Crouch almost catches out Toulalan as France play the ball around in their own half. The ball comes back to Crouch but he loses out and the French break swiftly. Anelka shimmies around on the edge of the area before lashing a left-foot shot just over from a narrow angle.

49 mins: Beckham's corner finds Crouch but the Liverpool striker can't keep his header down.

48 mins: Downing's cross from the left is sliced over his own bar by Makelele.

47 mins: Plenty of early touches for England's half-time subs.

46 mins: Beckham plays a long ball over the top intended for Owen but Thuram is back to head clear.

46 mins: England get the second 45 in play.

46 mins: England have made four changes at half-time. Terry (slight hamstring), Rooney, Gerrard and Joe Cole are off and on come Peter Crouch, Michael Owen, Stewart Downing and Joleon Lescott.

Half-time: France 1 England 0

45 mins: The half-time whistle goes and France lead 1-0. Disappointing for England who had looked in control before the penalty.

45 mins: Rooney's sliding tackle wins England a throw, except the linesman doesn't see it that way and gives it to France.

44 mins: Jeremy Toulalan slips as he plays the ball back to his goalkeeper but he just gets enough on it.

43 mins: Rooney's flicked header from a Barry cross calls Coupet into action but the ball is straight at the French 'keeper.

42 mins: Brown's cross from the right is poor and France clear.

41 mins: Rooney loses possession and then chases the ball around like a small boy in a bid to get it back.

40 mins: Rooney chases a long ball forward but he has no chance of keeping it in.

40 mins: Barry's return ball to Ashley Cole is far too heavy and France have a goal-kick.

39 mins: Beckham marks his 100th cap.... with a booking. A tug on Ribery is the punished crime and he can't complain.

38 mins: Beckham's whipped cross is cleared by Gallas for a throw.

37 mins: Brown misses his kick and Malouda forces James into a diving stop with an angled left-foot shot.

36 mins: Rooney swivels his hips, cuts inside and finds Gerrard but the Liverpool man can't get it out of his feet and the best he can do with his shot is win a corner. Beckham sends it in but France clear and break upfield.

35 mins: Trezeguet is flagged offside as he peels off Terry's shoulder.

34 mins: Will England continue to keep patient possession or will they up the pace now that they've fallen behind?

33 mins: England look for an immediate response but can't find a way through.

32 mins: GOAL RIBERY. Ribery steps up and sends James the wrong way from the spot. Off comes his shirt revealing a message paying tribute to French commentator, Thierry Gilardi, who died suddenly this week. Ribery is booked for taking his shirt off.

31 mins: Sudden drama in the England box as Anelka is upended by James as he latches onto a through ball and the hosts are awarded a penalty. No arguments about that one.

30 mins: Eric Abidal hurls a long throw into the box but Ferdinand heads clear.

29 mins: John Terry is penalised for a push on Chelsea teammate Anelka.

29 mins: England are set up well here and France are struggling to make any inroads forward.

28 mins: Joe Cole's ball into the box is cleared.

27 mins: Malouda pumps a ball forward but it's meat and drink for Ferdinand.

26 mins: Such is England's dominance of possession that the visiting fans are singing "you're supposed to be at home" to their French counterparts.

26 mins: Ashley Cole is flagged offside after sharp passing from Gerrard and Barry.

25 mins: Just over a quarter of the match gone and Capello will be happy with what he's seen so far.

24 mins: England take a short one before they pick out the unmarked Ferdinand at the back post. He heads it across goal and ball bounces up for Gerrard who sends a difficult header over the bar.

23 mins: England knock the ball around cleverly in the final third before Joe Cole wins a corner off Thuram as he tries to get in a shot.

22 mins: Ashley Cole is quickly in to tackle his Chelsea teammate Makelele.

21 mins: More possession for England. Brown puts in a great ball from the right and Gerrard gets in a decent header although it's always going over the crossbar.

20 mins: Gerrard takes a nice ball from Rooney but he goes for an early shot which he balloons over the bar.

19 mins: Beckham gets back well to win the ball and set England off again.

19 mins: Joe Cole is stripped of possession again and France break although Malouda can't get past Ferdinand.

18 mins: Patient possession by England which is jeered by the home crowd. The two Coles combine down the left but Ashley can't get a cross in.

17 mins: England are having trouble getting the ball to stick up front and they don't really have the option of going over the top, with Rooney and Gerrard both looking to drop deep.

16 mins: Lovely footwork by Ribery but Francois Clerc can't deliver the return pass.

15 mins: Ashley Cole's cross is palmed away unconvincingly by Gregory Coupet and Beckham almost cashes in at the far post.

14 mins: Brown slides off the pitch when chasing the ball and almost scythes down his boss Fabio Capello.

13 mins: Hargreaves' defensive header deflects off Malouda for a goal-kick although the home crowd think it's a corner. They're wrong.

12 mins: Ribery breaks with speed after Joe Cole loses the ball before Anelka's cross is blocked by Gareth Barry.

11 mins: Anelka, allowed space, turns on the edge of the area but he scuffs his shot and it's an easy save for James.

10 mins: Thuram is rather fortunate not to concede a corner as England press again.

9 mins: Malouda gets space in the box but Ferdinand gets back to make an important tackle and the ball is back with David James.

8 mins: Wes Brown concedes a free-kick out on the left. Ribery swings in the cross and Nicolas Anelka, who has lost his marker, heads narrowly wide. An escape there for England.

7 mins: Ribery slips and England break forward but the move breaks down as they try and release the ball too early.

6 mins: Beckham presses Claude Makelele in midfield. England are putting France under pressure as soon as the hosts get possession.

5 mins: Beckham crosses from the right and Lilian Thuram has to head behind for a corner. Beckham takes but can't pick out Rio Ferdinand.

5 mins: Franck Ribery and David Trezeguet play a one two on the edge of the area but England clear.

4 mins: Florent Malouda gets the ball 25 yards out but his touch is poor and England win it back.

3 mins: Beckham picks the ball up in the right back position and fizzes a forward ball to Wayne Rooney but it's at an awkward height and the Manchester United man can't control it.

2 mins: Beckham runs into traffic in midfield and loses the ball but gets back to win a good tackle.

2 mins: Owen Hargreaves commits the first foul of the game after Steven Gerrard gets caught in possession.

1 min: France, in all blue, get this friendly international under way.

Pre-match: David Beckham wins his 100th cap for England after being named in Fabio Capello's starting line-up for the friendly international with France in Paris.

The Los Angeles Galaxy player, who made his debut against Moldova in 1996, is preferred to David Bentley in the first XI.

It means Beckham joins Peter Shilton, Billy Wright, Sir Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore as the fifth player to reach the 100 cap mark for England.

Beckham had been left out of the starting line-up against Switzerland last month by Capello and told to prove his fitness.

Now the Italian intimates the former Manchester United star could play a part with his country up until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Capello makes two other changes from the side which had beaten the Swiss 2-1 at Wembley in his first game in charge.

John Terry comes back into the side for the injured Matthew Upson but he has relinquished the captaincy to Rio Ferdinand who is leading England for the first time.

The other change sees Owen Hargreaves preferred to Jermaine Jenas as Capello goes for two holding players in the middle of the park.

Hargreaves will be playing alongside Gareth Barry and looks set to operate with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Teams:

France: Coupet, Abidal, Gallas, Makelele, Malouda, Toulalan, Clerc, Thuram, Trezeguet, Ribery, Anelka.
Subs: Landreau, Mexes, Cisse, Govou, Squillaci, Alou Diarra, Flamini, Evra.

England: James, Brown, Ferdinand, Terry, Ashley Cole, Beckham,

Hargreaves, Barry, Joe Cole, Gerrard, Rooney.
Subs: Robinson,

Johnson, Lescott, Bridge, Bentley, Downing, Owen, Crouch,

Walcott, Green.

Referee: Florian Meyer (Germany)
