July 30, 1930: The very first World Cup final took place in Montevideo in front of 93,000 people, who were all in place two hours before kick-off. There was some disagreement about the match ball, with FIFA solving the problem by allowing Argentina to provide the ball for the first half, and Uruguay for the second. Oddly enough, Argentina won the first half but Uruguay won the second, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 win. The following day was declared a national holiday in Uruguay, while the Argentine fans took it well by throwing stones at the Uruguayan consulate in Buenos Aires.
July 30, 1966: "And here comes Hurst he's got...some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over. It is now! It's four!"
Gordon Banks, George Cohen, Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore (c), Ray Wilson, Nobby Stiles, Alan Ball, Bobby Charlton, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst, Roger Hunt - those names mean something to every man, woman and child in England who knows anything at all about football.
Never mind that the ball didn't strictly cross the line for the third goal, England won 4-2 and Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup trophy.
On This Day In Real History...
1989: General Jaruzelski steps down after eight years as leader of the Communist Party in Poland.

At Number One...when England won the World Cup was 'Out of Time' by Chris Farlowe.

"whenever an English fan -of any club- ever ends on the wrong side of a sporting decision that costs them big time, and gets annoyed at opposing fans celebrating and rejoicing without a care in the world about the dodgy decision, they should just think back to how they felt/feel about England's 3rd goal in that final. ~~ What I'm trying to say is that its a normal and natural reaction, people should chill out about that rather than getting all b*tchy at each other as we so often see after controversial results in the mailbox (and in real life I'm sure as well)"
