FC Twente preserved their two-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie after beating free-scoring Ajax 1-0.
Steve McClaren's side just about deserved the win given to them by Bryan Ruiz's solitary goal two minutes into the second half.
Third-placed Ajax, who are now six points adrift of the summit, hammered arch-rivals Feyenoord 5-1 last weekend to improve their already impressive goals tally to 40 from 12 games.
But they almost found themselves one down just nine minutes in, former Ajax midfielder Kenneth Perez hitting the bar from 15 yards.
It took 24 minutes for Twente to threaten again with a Blaise N'Kufo header clipping Jan Vertonghen and drifting wide.
Twente midfielder Theo Janssen then shot over the bar from 25 yards.
Ajax responded with Urby Emanuelson playing in Luis Suarez but the Eredivisie's top scorer could only put his shot into the side netting.
Twente broke the deadlock soon after the restart. Janssen whipped in a free-kick and Ruiz rose highest to plant his header into the top left-hand corner.
Ruiz then turned provider with a cross for N'Kufo but the Switzerland international headed inches wide.
Ajax came close to an equaliser just after the hour mark when Suarez's shot was smuggled off the line by Dwight Tiendalli. Ajax claimed the defender had used his hand but the referee was unconvinced.
Twente had another chance to make sure of the win after 65 minutes. N'Kufo played in Perez but his lob did not have the power to beat the advancing Maarten Stekelenburg.
