Chisholm, who played almost 200 matches for Sunderland, will work alongside marketing director Mike Farnan as the club looks to continue building its international profile on and off the pitch.
His role will be to explore football opportunities oversee in conjunction with the club's international marketing activities.
Chisholm added: "To come to a club of this calibre is a wonderful opportunity.
"Helping Sunderland to enhance and develop its existing work overseas is something I'm hugely excited about and I can't wait to get started in my new role."
