Alfred Finnbogason: Heerenveen striker has been linked with Sunderland

Finnbogason has been in prolific form for Heerenveen this season after joining the Dutch club last August from Lokeren following a loan spell at Helsingborg.

The Iceland international was reportedly watched by Sunderland against Ajax earlier this month, while Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham United have also been linked with the 24-year-old.

The forward's agent recently confirmed there has been interest from England, although Heerenveen have yet to hold talks with any other clubs.

Reports in Italy, meanwhile, had claimed Van Basten had tipped off his old club AC Milan about Finnbogason and the Heerenveen boss is in no doubt as to the player's potential.

"I put Finnbogason in the category of strikers like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Jon Dahl Tomasson," Van Basten is quoted by the Sunday Mirror. "All started their career at Heerenveen.

"Finnbogason could become a fabulous striker. He has fantastic vision, an eye for goals and is of massive value to this club."

Heerenveen reportedly value Finnbogason in the £5million bracket and he has two years left on his contract.

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
