Manager Paolo Di Canio declined to comment on reports that the scouting system would be overhauled, but the Black Cats issued a statement on Friday announcing Robson is leaving with immediate effect.

Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne said: "We would like to place on record our thanks to Pop for his contribution to the club and we wish him well for the future."

The much-travelled and highly-experienced Robson joined the club in 2011 under then manager Steve Bruce.
