Kevin Ball: Set for further Sunderland talks this weekend

The interim coach has put himself forward as a candidate for the permanent role following Paolo Di Canio's departure, while owner Ellis Short continues to mull over his options.

"I spoke to the board earlier in the week and they said about taking Saturday's game and then we would speak after, and I was quite happy to do that," Ball said.

"Yes, some people might say, 'You are better off getting it sorted out', but ultimately, they have got a little window now."

Ball's two games in charge to date have seen a 2-0 League Cup victory over Peterborough, and a 3-1 league defeat by Liverpool.

Sunderland have garnered just a solitary point from the 18 they have contested to date but Ball is hoping for a positive response after reviewing recent games with the players.

"It's difficult because you are sitting watching video footage of yourself. It can be great if you are doing well," he said.

"But if you see something and think, 'I should have done that better', and they are in here amongst their mates, their peers, that's quite hard to deal with as well.

"It's not to embarrass them or anything - this is what I have said to them - it's to help them see what we need to do to improve that little minor detail that might be the difference between winning or losing, getting a goal or not getting a goal, conceding a free-kick that leads to a goal or not.

"They have seen it from a very positive angle, and that's what I want."

Don't forget you can watch Sunderland v Manchester United live this Saturday 5 October on Sky Sports 1, KO 17.30

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
