Borini hopes for derby spark

Fabio Borini hopes his derby winner against Newcastle United will provide the spark for Sunderland to turn their season around.

Last Updated: 27/10/13 at 16:42 Post Comment

The Black Cats collected their first success of the campaign on Sunday at the ninth time of asking.

They remain inside the drop zone, with just four points to their name, but they are off the bottom and moving in the right direction.

Gus Poyet's side have Borini to thank for boosting fragile confidence, with the on-loan striker stepping off the bench to snatch all three points in dramatic style against Newcastle.

Asked if victory over their fiercest rivals will spring Sunderland into life, the Italian forward told Sky Sports: "We hope so. We gave everything today.

"It is a special game and we need to show that every game is as special to us as this game. We won this game and hopefully we can get a few wins now.

"If we play like we played today, with a little bit more calm on the ball, we can really improve our game."

Pressed on how much credit Poyet deserves for having raised morale in the wake of Paolo Di Canio's acrimonious departure, Borini added: "Lots of the work we've done is because of him.

"He came in and gave us the enjoyment we needed and obviously the football. So now it'll take a little bit of time to improve again, but that's a great first step."

e was right to leave, but not just because of the money City were coming into. If I remember rightly he had a reasonable amount of chances to shine at City, but he never passed the bloody ball. Loads of aimless dribbles and 40 yard shots and not much else. I would say that if he had learnt to be a bit more of a team player he may have done better at City.
