Cabral has not played a competitive game for Sunderland since August and it appears Gus Poyet is willing to let the player move on.

The 25-year-old joined Sunderland last summer on a Bosman free transfer from Swiss side Basel, but he has failed to establish himself on Wearside.

A number of clubs are thought to have expressed an interest in signing Cabral, but Genoa are now hoping to sign the all-action midfielder on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Cabral's agent, Walter Fernandez, has confirmed he is in talks with Genoa and that the midfielder could be set for a medical at Luigi Ferraris later this week.

"We are speaking to Genoa after being given permission by Sunderland," Fernandez told Sky Sports.

"We hope to have more news soon and maybe we could have a medical soon."
