Monk was placed in charge as head coach following Michael Laudrup's departure seven weeks ago, but no announcement has yet been made on whether or not he will lead Swansea permanently next season.

Despite the uncertainty, the former Swans captain insists all his efforts are concentrated on steering the Welsh club up the table.

They are currently five points above the drop zone ahead of Saturday's game against fellow strugglers Norwich City at the Liberty Stadium.

Monk said: "Honestly, I am not thinking about my own position. I am trying to do what is best for the players and best for the club.

"Hopefully, we are safe as soon as possible. We are not in that position right now.

"People ask me am I preparing to take it next season? I would be stupid not to.

"I don't want to get to the position where I haven't prepared as if I was taking it for next season, and then I get to the end of the season and he (chairman) says 'yes, you take it' and I am unprepared."

A 2-2 draw at Arsenal on Tuesday night lifted the Swans, and Monk added: "It was a confidence boost for the players against one of the top sides. Going forward, those are the sort of performances we need to produce.

"We need to use it as momentum going into this game against Norwich.

"It is a totally different game, a totally different side that we are playing. We are at home, and we just want to get our home form back to what it has been.

"We want to put a performance in after the West Brom game (Swansea lost 2-1). We feel that we owe the crowd a little bit of a performance.

"I have said all along that it is a results-driven business. We have not got the points we should have had this season, and by our standards we've had a very poor season compared to what we know we can do.

"The pressure is on us to try and get safe as soon as possible and get the points on the board as soon as possible, but that's the same for Norwich and a number of teams.

"This is the business end of the season when everything really gets decided.

"You have to deal with pressure. Some players thrive on it, others you have to protect a little but more.

"There is no bigger critic than the player. We have got a good group. They all want to do it and get themselves out of this situation, not just for themselves but for the club as well.

"I can only do what I am doing. I am working hard and preparing the players as much as possible.

"I am more than confident in this group and in myself to be able to get the club safe and make sure we can build again come the summer, and it should be in the Premier League.

"It will be a tough game on Saturday. They (Norwich) are a side where I think their league position belies how good they are. I have watched a number of their games, and they have got some very good players."
