Humble apologies, @sanity1892, but I am going to have to agree with you wholeheartedly here. Dontcha just hate all the 'As so-and-so sagely wrote here' guff some writers come out with on this site? Speculation, followed by 20-20 hindsight, self-congratulation, and amnesia about all the predictions gone wrong. And on a more curious note, why is it that in articles about footballers, we need to be told their age? See "as the 29 year-old got the score back to 2-2", or some such as an example. Is his age really of any relevance? Why not "as the man with a scar on his face" or perhaps "as the man who drives a (insert flash car here), as opposed to the (insert other flash car here) favoured by..."? Just a bit odd, in my opinion.

Mostly makes sense to me apart from the point about Allen, who looks a good player [even if not worth 15m], and Borini [no justification in these brackets] causing Pool owners not to invest in the summer, when they've just spent another 20m in the winter!

It would be interesting to view this again at the end of the season. I suspect that all parties in the Odemwingie fiasco will live to regret it. QPR will surely regret not matching the asking price for an experienced goalscorer when they get (deservedly) relegated. Odemwingie will surely regret his little Twitter outburst and subsequent road trip to London when he realises it has probably buggered up his last chance for a bigger, fatter contract and Albion may come to regret not cashing in when we're paying him £40k a week to sit on his arse and sulk.

Remember a year ago when you had a pretty large number of fans demanding an England call-up for Holt and claiming that his continued omission was sign of anti-small-club bias? Maybe now they can accept that anyone who rises to become England manager knows a thing or two about football and that the only bias they have is against players who aren't good enough for international football.

If there's anything that Liverpool should've learned from last summer, it's that you cannot keep signing only young potential players and expect not to suffer. Allen will come good, Borini probably won't, but either way Liverpool needs experienced players to compliment the youth. Hope that they learned their lesson in time for the upcoming summer transfer window.

All good stuff. Joe Allen surprised me at £15mn, he always seemed neat and tidy and not a massive amount more. I understand you have to gamble but that was a lot of money. Shame about Newcastle, they were great fun last season.

I personally don't think the club regrets spending £15m on Joe Allen. Before picking up a knock in December, he'd played almost every minute of Premier League football (other than a 15 minute resting in one of the matches). Gerrard and Lucas (now he's returned from injury) are cemented as the best in their respective roles. So in the final midfield role we have to accommodate Allen and two other players with potential to have a big future at the club. Allen (22), Shelvey (20) and Henderson (22) have to rotate and fight for their place, it may be no surprise Allen has lost his rhythm. But the intrinsic value of bringing in players who you already have a relationship with, who already respect you, and understand/have experience of your new style of play? The lack of reliance on Allen might be more indicative of how quickly the other players adapted to Rodgers' passing game.
