Ronaldo was never going to Arsenal, or to Liverpool for that matter. Utd had an agreement with Sporting even as their two rivals were courting the player - they were wasting their time sniffing around a player who's future had already been determined. After playing against Sporting and with the Utd players all excited about the potential of Ronaldo, the process was accelerated, but it was always going to happen.

What about a manager who slipped through the net? In the mid-Eighties it was reported that PELÉ was on Bolton's hitlist for the manager's job. They went one better - they got John McGovern.

There is of course one flaw in these what-if scenarios. Had Zlatan signed for Arsenal at 17 he would have left at 18 for a club paying more money. Same can be said for most of the clubs on this list. The Christiano Ronaldo one does make me very very sad though.

@Mr. eko - Love the Zlatan. What a quote. What a guy. I doff my cap to your moniker too. "Mr Eko", great character, great show...

@disGUSting - I thought at the time Ronaldinho was caught in a love triangle involving us, Barca, Madrid and Beckham. Though that's more than a triangle. We wanted to sell Becks and buy Ronnie. Madrid and Barca both wanted Becks. Madrid said "Sell us Becks or we'll nab Ronnie out of spite!". We sell them Becks. Ronnie sticks 2 fingers up and goes to Barca. We console ourselves at being mugged off by buying a talented young winger from Sporting Lisbon instead... Can't say I'd complain about how it turned out.

the duvel is right - there is another list out there of could-have-been-legends who have signed for the wrong manager at 17, or didn't take the right noeve and never been what they could have been. Its not the same at all, but I rememer the tale of Billy Kenny at Everton, what might have become of him if someone had got him my the scruiff of the neck. I'm pretty sure I bought him for my Championship Manager team and, because you got an assist and a key pass for corners in them days, he rocked an average rating of over 9.0 for his season!

How about Suarez to Arsenal? Legally, we should've had him, but Wenger didn't call Henry's brilliant bluff. He would've been top scorer for us and we would've gone on to...finish fourth. Oh and we signed Ozil's body but his spirit slipped through the net and is floating around the Bernabeu like a plastic bag caught in an updraft.

'They can't even blame this one on Carlos Tevez.' I have been reading online football articles every day for well over a decade now and nothing I've read has ever made me laugh as much as that comment!

e made his power play to try and get Sheikhy to raise his wages or trade him to PSG. PSG were probably not interested and he is stuck with no cake and no vacation. @Jay_D> Surely you jest about FFP being real, right? All Platini is doing is making billionaries pay measly fines, so he and his cronies can get rich. If a fool can pay 50 mil for David Luiz, he will happily pay some fine to UEFA. FFP has failed as for it to succeed UEFA had to take it...
