Hugo Lloris: Did not expect to be second choice after joining Tottenham

The France international had been used in a rotation system with Brad Friedel by manager Andre Villas-Boas when he first arrived at the club.

However, the 25-year-old former Lyon shot-stopper told French newspaper L'Equipe that he did not expect to be second choice after joining the North Londoners.

When asked if he now considers himself the No.1 at Spurs, Lloris said: "It's up to the coach to talk about that. I know my place and I just have to give my best.

"When we negotiated the transfer, I did not expect to be second choice. I adapted my game and tried to earn some playing time.

"I've never asked the manager about my situation and, during training, I always give the maximum."

Lloris also claims he is still adapting to life in the Premier League, saying: "The game here is different to Ligue 1. Against teams like Liverpool, it's almost like a Champions League match.

"Here, teams never give up, which I guess is the beauty of English football. You have to be strong and for us goalkeepers there is more contact and referees don't blow their whistle so much."
