Jan Vertonghen: Believes Tottenham are capable of a top four finish

The Belgian central defender, who has been playing in the left-back position due to Benoit Assou-Ekotto's injury, has been in excellent form since his summer arrival from Ajax, with his solo effort in Spurs' shock 3-2 win at Old Trafford a particular highlight.

Despite his side's inconsistent form, Vertonghen believes that Spurs are more than capable of finishing in a Champions League qualification spot.

"Yeah we can (finish in top four)," he told The Independent.

"Still we need to do a lot of work but we can get fourth."

Until the 90th minute at Goodison Park last week, Spurs looked set to make it four straight Premier League wins, only for two late Everton goals to turn the match on its head.

Villas-Boas has faced some criticism over his side's inability to close out some matches, but Vertonghen is adamant Spurs have the right man at the helm.

"He loves attacking football, and we have the ability to do that," he added.

"I like him as a man. I think he is a very good man and he is good for his players.

"He shows the same ambition. He talks with me. I think he is a good manager."
