Tottenham's home record of just 18 points from 12 matches is in contrast to a return of 26 points from the same number of away games.
With Spurs six points adrift of Liverpool in fourth ahead of Sunday's visit of Everton, Sherwood knows his side can ill-afford any more slip-ups.
"The results haven't been great from the start of the season up to now at home," Sherwood said.
"Funnily enough, in a very bad result against Man City, I thought the fans were magnificent, really stuck with us and we just hoped we could have made it a special evening.
"Unfortunately it didn't work for us but it is vitally important that you win your home games.
"Our away record has been excellent, but if you're going to be top four you've got to play very, very well and get the results both home and away."
Sherwood is expecting a tough afternoon against Everton - one point above Tottenham in the table - especially as Roberto Martinez's side lost 4-0 at Anfield in their last away fixture.
"If you look at those goals they conceded against Liverpool, it was not because they were wide open it was to do with individual errors and unfortunately they couldn't turn it around a very good side," he added.
"But I have seen Everton do that to a lot of teams this season, so we hope to
catch them on a bad day."
